How to Take Notes Mrs. Oakley 2013 – 2014
Step 1: Get Prepared • Gather all the materials you may need • Notebook/Filler Paper • Pen or pencil • Internet-capable device (computer, tablet, smart phone, etc.) • If internet is down, use your textbook • Textbook • Optional: • Headphones • Highlighter • Different colored pen
Step 2: Get Comfortable • If your internet-device is portable, find a quite location to view the material • Give the material your full attention and eliminate all distractions • Do not watch TV, listen to music, text, facebook,, etc. while watching the lecture or reading the material
Step 3: Get Organized • You should set up your notes the same way each time. • My recommendation of how to set up your notes is on the next slide. • On the last page of your notes for the topic, write down any questions you have about the material. • This is very important! You may not remember what you were confused about by the next day in class.
Your Name Class Period Date Topic of Lecture (Ex: Scientific Method) - Could also put Chapter & Section (Ex: 1-3) Information from the lecture * Text, Tables/Charts, and/or Drawings you feel are important • Page Number • Start at # 1 for each lecture
Tips for Note Taking • Pause and rewind when you need a moment to finish writing or need to take time to understand the information • Skip a line (or a few) between new ideas • This will make your notes easier to read. Also, if you re-watch the video or learn any new information, you will have space to add some more notes • Abbreviate as needed • Make sure you will remember your abbreviations! • You may not need to write down all information, feel free to summarize. The most important thing is that you understand the information.
Tips for Note Taking • After viewing the video/PowerPoint, go back and re-read your notes • Do they make sense? Can you read your writing? Do you remember what your abbreviations mean? • Underline vocabulary terms • Note: You can use a different color to underline (or a highlighter) • Pull out the main ideas, key points, important people/dates • Write these at the end of your notes in the “Summary” section • Note: • An example of my notes from this lecture is on the following slides. • Instead of writing the key information at the end of your notes, you can use a highlighter to set the information apart (like I did here).

Adjusting Your Note Taking Style • Once you are familiar with my expectations of your notes, you can adjust the format you use. • Another popular format is Cornell Notes. • Watch this video if you are interested in learning about the Cornell Note taking style (this is not mandatory)
Homework for this Assignment • Your notes will be checked as part of your homework grade. • In order to ensure you are setting up your notes correctly, I would like you to do a practice note taking assignment. • Pick your subject • Your favorite TV show, movie, book (a chapter), etc. • Make sure it is appropriate to use as a homework assignment! • Take notes in the format as described in this PowerPoint • Use headings, page numbers, summarize the content, end with questions you have • This will be collected and graded according to the rubric (posted on website)
