The Lombards • They conquered the Ostgoths and became the dominant force in Italy. • They adopted Arian Christianity, threatening Papal power
The Lombards • In 754 A.D. Pope Stephen II hired Pipin the Short, the Frankish ruler, to defeat the Lombards. • In 774 A.D. Charlemagne conquers the Lombards, adding them to his empire.
The Lombards • The Lombards effectively ended all Byzantine power in Italy • This meant that there was no longer any chance of Eastern Orthodox Christianity chalenging Papal authority
