  2. Agenda • What is Title I? • Parent Rights under Title I • Parent Involvement • School Achievement Data • Single Plan for Student Achievement • Title I Funds • Title I Parent Involvement Policy • Home/School Compact

  3. What is Title I • Title I is a K-12 program. • Provides additional academic support and learning opportunities for students at schools with high percentages of socioeconomically disadvantaged children. • The program is intended to help ensure that all students meet state academic standards.

  4. Goals of Title I • Increase academic achievement • Provide direct instructional support to students. • Provide professional development for teachers. • Promote parent education and involvement.

  5. Parent Rights • Ask for meetings and trainings • Review the school’s achievement data • Review the parent involvement plan • Review and modify the Title I Parent Involvement Policy and Home/School Compact

  6. Parent Involvement The School Site Council (SSC) provides parents with an opportunity to be involved in the academic program of the school. The SSC develops, monitors, and evaluates the Single Plan for School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) to implement programs and services that support students.

  7. Parent Involvement at Our School • Monthly Parent Meeting • Parent/Teacher Conference (twice a year) • Receive progress reports on student academic performance (every 6 weeks) • Volunteer opportunities • Participation on SSC and ELAC

  8. School Achievement Data • Schools analyze CST and CELDT results and review AYP and API status. • Schools use the data to align curriculum to state and district academic standards. • Schools adjust instructional practices based on the findings of the assessment data.

  9. Our School Performance Data

  10. Single Plan for Students Achievement • Parents are informed about the school’s curriculum in English/ Language Arts and Math, as well as other core subjects. • Parents also receive information about the assessments used to measure student progress in these academic areas.

  11. Single Plan for Student Achievement ELA and Math Goals To increase the number of students reaching proficiency and advance level by 5%.

  12. SPSA: Strategies We Will Implement • Use ELL strategies to help ELL access the content • Students scoring below grade level will participate in intervention classes instead of electives • Students will learn to take Cornell notes, use organizational skills, and graphic organizers to learn more effectively • Student support teams will monitor student academic progress monthly, and will work with individual student • Resource teacher will work in the classroom to provide extra supports to teachers and students • Price Mentors will work in Math and ELA classrooms to provide small group tutoring to students

  13. Title I Funds [Federal Funds] • Base on number of students eligible for free/reduced lunch. Schools receive Title I funds if 40% or more of students are eligible for free/reduced lunch. • Schools in SDUSD are ranked according to this percentage, and schools receive a certain amount of money per student.

  14. Title I Funds (cont.) • 1% of a school’s total Title I budget is for parent involvement activities • Schools in Program Improvement must set aside a minimum of 10% for professional development • Funds must supplement, not supplant district funds

  15. The Title I Parent Involvement Policy • Every Title I school, in collaboration with parents, must prepare a site level parent involvement policy. • The Parent Involvement Policy describes how the school will involve the parents in an organized, ongoing, and timely way in the planning, review, and improvement of the Title I program at the school.

  16. Our Title I Parent Involvement Policy • The Wilson Middle School Title I Parent Involvement Policy was shared, discussed and modified during the School Site Council (SSC) meeting held on November 3, 2011. We will continue to provide a flexible number of Parent Meetings to allow for community input and discussions regarding our school. These monthly meeting will be scheduled and posted to allow adequate time for all parties involved. The following topics will be covered: • General information regarding Wilson Middle School’s programs and school expectations • Planning and implementation of numerous strategies aimed at maximizing the opportunities for involvement and fostering partnerships between our parents, community and our school. • High School graduation requirements. • College entrance requirements and preparation to fulfill these requirements. • Distribution and discussion of current student assessment data and progress. • Resources, both school and district/community, that are available to improve our students academic standing. • Presentation and discussion of our annual site plan. • Conferencing with teachers and staff in confidential settings • Discussion of our parent involvement policy and revision of the plan. • Planned improvement in student performance. • Input from our parent meetings will be shared with our School Site Council (SSC) and English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) to provide a vehicle by which parents are involved in the planning, review and revision of the program in a manner, which is ongoing, timely and organized. • The input of parents and community members during the various parent meetings is highly valued. It is expected that suggestions, concerns, or questions received at these meetings are reviewed and responded in a manner that is timely, respectful and professional. In addition, regularly scheduled meetings will address and discuss those topics calling for the review and action of the SSC. Wilson’s School Administration team will place these items on the agendas of the appropriate parent meetings. Notifications of parent meetings will go out through various means: telephone calling system, school marquee, school website, and flyers at least one week before the meeting. • Individual student assessment data is shared annually with parents. The data is available in various languages and is distributed by the Research & Reporting Department and the Testing Department of San Diego City Schools and the State of California. This policy is sent home with the student the week of November 7, 2012.

  17. Home/School Compact The Home/School Compact describes the responsibilities of the school, the parent, and the student for improved student achievement. This compact is sent home with the student the week of October 17, 2012.

  18. The Home/School Compact (cont.) • Developed in collaboration among parents, teachers and students. • Updated annually. • NCLB recommends that compacts be standards-based. • Distributed after the site Title I Parent Involvement Policy.
