  1. WHAT IS CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT? • The set of strategies that teachers and students use to ensure a productive, hospitable learning environment to prevent disruptions in the learning process.

  2. FIRST DAY of School • Greet your students • Get to know your students • Set ground rules • Students know the class procedures • Build Rapport • BE PREPARED!!!!

  3. Establishing Classroom Rules • You can have your own rules • You can use general rules as a grade level • You and the students can make up your classroom rules

  4. RULES Collaboration • We create rules together (I let them know a group of students came up with rules for me to use forever) • I have 5 rules: • Respect yourself and others. • You have no right to interfere with others’ education. • Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. • If you don’t have anything nice to say, keep it to yourself. • Allow Mr. Roycroft to teach!!!!!!

Rules are broken then a consequence is given • These are consequences I use: If you decide to BREAK a rule • First offense: name on the board as a warning to stay up all week • Second offense: check by your name/ 20 minutes after school on Friday • Third offense: 2 checks by your name/ loss of 1 week of recess and 40 minutes after school on Friday & a call home • At the end of the week you can start with a clean slate for a new week.

  6. When students break a rule • You should be fair not necessarily = • You should give opportunity to fix behavior • You should be swift without negotiating • You should be consistent

  7. How to prevent negative behavior • Keep students engaged in the lesson • Teacher mobility • Teacher/student contact: visual, verbal, proximity • A variety of reinforcers • Don’t ignore negative behavior

  8. BUILD RAPPORT This is number one in being able to discipline students effectively. You MUST have rapport with your students. This makes the transition of discipline go smoothly.

  9. How can you build RAPPORT? • Consistency (being fair) • Being an effective reflective educator • Speak to your students in brief conversations • Be visible in school activities • Each interaction you have with a student is an opportunity to build a relationship.

  10. BE CAREFUL!!! • Your attitude toward your students matters! They are perceptive! • Your students are not your friends! You can convey your role as a teacher by your dress, demeanor, behavior, and words

Build Rapport with Parents • Use reverse psychology on students • Talk to the parent to possibly get them involved • Allow them access to you with parameters • Find out what they use as a reward and consequence system • Don’t keep calling the house about a child’s poor behavior. You will be a thorn in that parents side every time you call.

  13. Parent Letter Hello, I am and there are five things I’d like to ask of the parents of my students.

  14. If you feel there is a problem with me or my teaching, do not call the principal. Call me first and give me a chance to discuss the concerns with you.

  15. If you need to talk to me, send me a note, an e-mail, or call. I’ll respond and give you a time convenient for us both. Please do not show up at the classroom door unannounced for a conference.

  16. Please do not allow your child to be late or miss school for anything other than sickness or death in the family. Allowing your child to miss school because of a haircut or clothes shopping with you is sending the wrong message to children.

  17. I’ve missed a total of 8 days of school in 10 years; therefore you should do your best to have your child there every day.

  18. Realize that your child is one of many I teach each day, and that it is not possible to adhere to all of their needs. The sole responsibility of educating is not just for the teacher alone; it is you, the parent, as well.

  19. Trust me that I can give your child the best education possible. They all deserve a private school education for free and I’m here to see that they get it!!!

  23. Our Children are an endangered species • Each year approximately 700,000 students drop out of school • Each night 100,000 are homeless • Only about 4% of families in America consist of married couples • An estimated 25 million Americans are illiterate

  24. The Truth about US • Only about 22% of Americans have a college degree. Teachers all have one. • We are the only profession which half have voluntary advanced degrees • Teachers are an intelligent, certified, licensed, and competent group of people • We create, shape, and mold the future!
