Communication is key for a successful school year. Please reach out to me via email or notes for any questions or concerns. Find important information regarding absences, appointments, and transportation changes. Our classroom follows Responsive Classroom principles and focuses on building a positive climate, developing social skills, and academic achievement. Stay updated with homework assignments on our class page. We follow the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics. Explore the exciting topics covered in Social Studies and Science. Grades will be based on tests, classwork, and projects. Volunteer opportunities available. Thank you for your cooperation!

  1. Welcome to Back-to-School Night! GRADE 4 Ms. Linda Frederico

  2. Contact Information The key to a successful school year is communication from home to school. Feel free to email me or write me a note if you ever have any questions or concerns. I will get back to you as soon as I possibly can! lfrederico@shshartsdale.org

  3. Notes to School Please send a note if your child: • is absent • has an appointment • is leaving early • has a transportation change Please don’t e-mail me about dismissal changes. Contact the office directly and Mr. Rivera will let me know of any changes.

  6. Homework • Students are responsible for writing down their Homework in their student planners every day. Assignments will also be posted daily on our class page. • Homework is a reinforcement of the skills taught in the classroom and a review for tests. Incorporating interactive activities to keep it fun. Whereby, keeping them interested. • Homework is due the next day unless otherwise noted.

  8. English Language Arts • We use an integrated approach which follows the Common Core State Standards for 4th Grade. The program includes: • Reading: Text complexity and the growth of comprehension through close reading. Annotating the text • Writing: Text types, responding to literature, and research • Speaking and Listening: Flexible communication and collaboration • Language: Conventions, effective use, and VOCABULARY • A Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar, and Spelling Test follows each unit which will be taken on Fridays unless otherwise noted.

  9. Mathematics • Practicing multiplication facts through 12 at home is very important especially if your child has not mastered them! • All math problems are to be rechecked for accuracy. Written responses are crucial. Students need to be able to express how they solved the problem. Skills covered: *Place Value, Addition & Subtraction to One Million *Multiplying by 1-and 2-Digit Numbers *Dividing by 1-and 2-Digit Numbers *Factors, Divisibility, and Multiples *Comparing, Adding, Subtracting, and Multiplying Fractions *Relating Fractions to Decimals *Geometry, Measurement, & Data *Problem Solving and Critical Thinking

Social Studies New York State History and Government Topics Covered: • The Three Worlds: Native Americans, Europeans, Africans Meet in New York State • Geography of New York • Impact of Colonial and Revolutionary War • National and Local Government We use a combination of text book and the Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES Social Studies Program. 

  14. Science Units Covered: • Interactions of Air, Water, and Land • Properties of Water • Magnetism and Electricity • Animals, Plants, and The Environment

  15. Grades/Tests • Grades will come from testing, class work, home assignments, and projects. • Math tests can be retaken and an average of the two will be recorded. Retakes are taken three days after the test goes home • All tests are to be signed. A test folder will come home with your child’s tests inside. Please make sure to sign and return the next day.
