MSM II • The Mathematical Content Standards, adopted from the Mathematics Common Core, are designed to promote a balanced combination of conceptual and procedural and understanding. MSM II Content Units Unit 1 Ratios and Proportional Relationships Unit 2 The Number System Unit 3 Expressions and Equations Unit 4 Geometry Unit 5 Statistics and Probability
How will math look different this year? • Math Objectives are now called Math Standards and we have fewer standards to teach in all Math Courses • Textbooks will not be utilized as often • The beginning of class “drill” is now a “motivation” • Homework in Math Courses • Students will be working with more real-world applications and developing conceptual understanding of math concepts • Use of Worthwhile Mathematical Tasks • Working in cooperative learning groups
Sample Math Task • An international fast food chain reports that 8% of the people in the United States eat at its restaurants each day. The fast food chain currently has 12,800 stores in the United states. The most recent Census Bureau report states that approximately 310 million people live in the United States.Make a conjecture as to whether or not you believe the report from the fast food chain to be accurate information. Create a mathematical argument that validates your conclusion.
