  2. Warm-Up: Vocabulary • Complete “The Tell-Tale Heart”/”The Landlady” Vocabulary Review wksht. • Use your lists! • Spelling counts! • You may have to add an ending to verbs! • Use each TTH word TWICE! • Use each LL word ONCE!

  3. First Step: Identifying Symptoms • In your groups, you will have two graphic organizers: one of the body and one of the brain. • These organizers will assist you in documenting the narrator’s symptoms of mental illness you find within the text.

  5. Next Step: Research You will rotate through a series of stations to gain information about the following mental illnesses that the narrator could have: • Hyper Vigilance (model) • Dissociative Identity Disorder • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder • Schizophrenia

  6. Next Step: Research Each station consists of: • a brief description of the mental illness • a list of symptoms associated with that illness • a representative image • a video clip to view • (some stations have additional resources)

  7. Next Step: Research Your Tasks: • Follow the station directions. • Complete all steps. • Record notes and observations on the graphic organizer. Your notes need to be THOROUGH, as you will use this information as evidence in an argument writing piece.

  8. The Narrator’s Claim • The narrator claims to have heightened senses. • This disorder is called “Hyper Vigilance.” • Let’s walk through the Hyper Vigilance station together to better understand the narrator’s claim.

Hyper VigilanceStation Directions • Read the informational text about Hyper Vigilance. • On “The Tell-Tale Signs of Madness” graphic organizer, paraphrase a definition of Hyper Vigilance based on the article. • On your graphic organizer, record a list of symptoms that are commonly associated with Hyper Vigilance. • Watch the “What is Hyper Vigilance and How Does it Relate to PTSD?” video clip and record observations on your graphic organizer.

  10. Hyper VigilanceGoodTherapy.org • Hyper Vigilance is a state of preoccupation with possible unknown threats, constantly watching and scanning surroundings, a persistent sense of insecurity. It may appear similar to paranoia. • Symptoms include: • An increased startle reflex – a person my jump in response to sudden noises or surprises. • Dilated pupils, an increased heart rate, and elevated blood pressure. • Obsessive avoidance of perceived threats, along with increased scanning for threats. • Overestimation of a situation’s threatening nature.
