Visit Frequency and Purpose • Once every five years (20% of districts annually) • Monitoring of compliance with Iowa Code and Iowa Administrative Code (rule) • Monitoring of compliance with Perkins requirements (partial) • Assistance with systemic CTE program improvement
Main Components • CTE document review • CTE teacher interview(s) • CTE advisory committee interview(s)
Document Review • Combination of desk audit and on-site review • Includes systemic AND program specific items
Document Examples • Advisory committee members and meeting minutes • Course/program enrollment (disaggregated) • Articulation agreements • Program of Study documents • Program evaluation documents • Annual CTE program data summaries • CTSO information
Document Review Preparation • Identify where needed documents are stored • Identify individual(s) responsible • Maintain documents on a regular basis…don’t wait until the year of the visit • Use as a component of ongoing program improvement efforts
Teacher Interview • Primary topics are specific to CTE • Also includes some systemic questions
Sample Teacher Discussion Topics • Program design and delivery • Curriculum • Instruction • Professional Development • Collaboration with other disciplines • Collaboration with Advisory Committee • Progress on addressing Perkins requirements
Teacher Interview Preparation • Review the district’s most recent CTE program data • Review the questions provided by the DE on a regular basis • Discuss the questions as a group…don’t wait until the year of the visit • Use as a component of ongoing program improvement efforts
Advisory Committee Interview • Primary topics are specific to the defined roles of the committee
Sample Advisory Committee Discussion Topics • Committee roles and responsibilities • Collaboration with CTE teachers • Collaboration with other district advisory committees • Involvement in addressing Perkins requirements (e.g., approval of technical skill assessment[s])
Advisory Committee Interview Preparation • Review the roles and responsibilities of CTE advisory committees described in Iowa Code and rule (annually) • Review the district’s CTE program data (provided annually) • Review and discuss the questions provided by the DE on a regular basis…don’t wait until the year of the visit
