  1. Objective 17.02 • Explain the procedure for installing switches, making common splices, and doing other electrical wiring tasks

  2. Installation Procedures • Single Pole Switches: • Toggle • Rocker arm • Push button • Silent • Type depends on use and location

  3. Installation Procedures • A light fixture uses two terminals • A single pole switch has two terminals • A three-way switch • Has three terminals • Uses two traveler wires • A black and a red

  4. Installation Procedures • A four-way switch has four terminals and can only be installed in between two three-way switches • It has four travel wires

  5. Installation Procedures • Electrical or wiring boxes musts be installed at every junction, splice, light, switch or outlet

  6. Installation Procedures • Certain NEC Codes require wires to be inside conduit. • Thin conduit may be cut with a hack saw or a metal cutter saw • NM cable is installed inside buildings

  7. Installation Procedures • Outdoor wire is selected based on use • UF: used to bury underground as feeder wire • USE is used to provide mechanical protection where wires enter and leave the ground • SE and SEU are used to bring electrical service into a building • TW is used to provide service in areas that have moisture

  8. Installation Procedures • The wire loop should be attached to a screw terminal in the same direction the screw turns

  9. Installation Procedures • A rat tail splice is used inside junction boxes • A western union splice is used where strength of the splice is required

  10. Installation Procedure • Copper wire is preferred • If aluminum is used, one size larger wire must be used to carry the same electrical current • Remember the smaller the number, the larger the wire
