DJJ’s Mission The Governor’s mission is to raise personal incomes of South Carolinians by creating a better environment for economic growth, delivering government services more openly and efficiently, improving quality of life, and improving our state’s education. The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice supports the Governor’s mission by protecting the public and reclaiming juveniles through prevention, community programs, education, and rehabilitative services in the least restrictive environment.

  2. We are the NEW DJJ…. • No more “warehousing” troubled youth • Least restrictive environment • Work to change the family environment • Utilize community resources • Forge community partnerships and relationships • Collaborate with other agencies to provide community programs and services

  3. DJJ Roles • Juvenile Detention Center(s) • Juvenile Evaluation Center(s) • Juvenile Probation and Parole • Juvenile Prison System • School District

DJJ Responsibilities • Process all criminal cases committed by juveniles *16 and under (*except those offenses considered automatic waiver offenses at 16) • Perform intake interviews • Make recommendations to the Solicitor (E.g. Juvenile Arbitration Program or Contract) • Make recommendations to the Court • Perform secure and local psychological evaluations • Supervise all juveniles who are either on probation or parole • Enforce orders of the Court • Provide referral assistance to the general public

Juvenile Justice Overview • Receive a new referral (complaint) from law enforcement • Intake interview • Formulate recommendations for the Solicitor (E.g. divert, prosecute) • Make recommendations to the Court (E.g. evaluation, probation w/ • referrals) • Family Court Hearing • Trial vs. Plea • Disposition • Evaluation, Probation or Commitment • Evaluation • Secure or Local • Probation with referrals • Commitment (ALWAYS a last resort) • Indeterminate vs. Determinate

Programs and Referrals • Juvenile Arbitration Program (JAP) • First time non-violent offenders • Aiken County Juvenile Drug Court Program • First time or repeat offenders with alcohol/drug abuse/addiction • Teen After School Center (TASC) • Any at risk males 12-17 • Girls Circle • Ten week program for at risk girls aged 12 ½ to 16 • Family Solutions • Ten week program for families with youth who are first time probationers • Intensive Supervision Officers Programs (ISOP) • Juveniles committed on indeterminate or determinate sentences with placement, etc.
