Signs of Environmental and Social Improvements (Stress Reduction Indicators) • Pollution load reduced • Water quality deterioration arrested • Marine and coastal habitats/ Biodiversity restored • Destructive fishing practices reduced • Multiple-use conflicts reduced • Coastal waterfront improved and investment increased • Community concerns addressed Egret
Catalyzed Development of National Policies • China’s Ocean Agenda 21 • National Law on Sea Use Management Chinese white dolphin
Land-based Pollution Discharge Reduced (Yuan) Waste Water Treatment improved from 40%- 60% to 72%
Integrated Watershed Management Studies showed that non-point source pollutants (over 50% nutrients) were being received by the Xiamen Sea through Jiulong River and its drainage basins network upstream; continuing to threaten the marine environmental quality even if Xiamen fully controlled its local pollutant sources.
