Zhenghe • Travels went as far as east Africa in the Indian Ocean • 28,000 sailors on 62 ships • 7 total voyages • Voyages were stopped and all 62 ships were burned after Yongle’s death • Confucians ideologies believed to be the cause
Western Influence • Portuguese established a port at Maco until the 19th century • Christianity was introduced and compared to Confucianism • Clock, Eyeglass, Prism, Musical and Astronomical instruments
End of the Ming • Li Zicheng an angry postal worker led a revolt against the Ming and occupied Beijing • Manchu's upset at Li attacked and destroyed his army • Manchu's took hold of China and established the QING Dynasty
Qing Rule • Fearful of rebels all Chinese had to adopt official Manchu dress • Shaven forehead • Hair braided into a queue • “Lose your hair or lose your head”
Kangxi • Arguably the greatest ruler in Chinese history • Stabilized the country • Acceptant of the Christians • Patron of the arts and literature • Accepted Ming Politics and Confucianism
The West • The English will end up replacing the Portuguese • Trading port established at Canton • British will not be permitted to trade with main land China
Oda Nobunaga • 1st of the 3 unifiers • Try to consolidate Japan • Killed by one of his own generals
Toyotomi Hideyohsi • 2nd of the 3 unifiers • Capital located at Osaka • Created a national currency • Held “sword hunts” recruited samurai • Failed at centralizing Japan
Tokugawa Ieyasu • 3rd of the 3 unifiers • He proclaimed himself Shogun • Japan became unified • “Oda pounds the national rice cake, Hideyoshi kneads it, and in the end Ieyaus sits down and eats it”
Influence of the West • Weapons and armaments • Tobacco, clocks, spectacles • Christianity • Strong at first but turned toward conquest • Ieyasu kicked out missionaries
Tokugawa “Great Peace” • Rise of the Daimyo • Samurai not as important without war • Population increased to 1 million in the city of Edo (Tokyo) • First stage of Capitalism
