What About Our Schools? • Marihuana • Stronger & May be laced with other drugs • Is physically addictive, like Nicotine • Over ½ Kids addicted, started around age 14 • 58% who used 12 or more times a yr. had related problems from the drug use • Justify Use, Movie Stars use it, their Favorite Bands sing about it • Teens who smoke Marihuana are twice as likely to skip classes

  4. Cocaine? • Cocaine use has been stabilizing since ’97 • Teens experiment after Marihuana use • Peer pressure from friends & older family members • Quickly addicted after 1st few uses • Not a new drug / Abused for over 100 yrs. • Teen uses as young 11-14 yrs. of age

Methamphetamine? • Use has increased between ages 12-17 yrs. old • Enjoyed because of increase wakefulness and physical activity while decreasing appetite. • Feelings stem from the high levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine into areas of the brain that regulate feelings of pleasure • Psychotic symptoms last for months after use. • thin and beautiful has become increasingly important • Rave culture encourages hard drug use as a means to personal freedom, self-discovery, and peer acceptance.

Ecstasy • Ecstasy is a pyscho-stimulantive drug used mostly by teens and young adults • Increase in Overdoses in past 5 yrs. • “X” works by affecting the concentration in the brain. • Changes the natural effects of serotonin that carries signals from one nerve cell to another. • Which helps to modulate moods and emotions. • MDMA is fun at first but very toxic to the brain, and can cause damage to the body and brain cells.

Heroin • Days of needle users is past among teens… • Kids as young as 9 or 10 years of age coming to the hospital emergency rooms with Heroin Withdrawal. • "Cheese" is Mexican black-tar heroin that has been diluted with crushed tablets of over-the-counter sleep medication. • Kids enter treatment because "I was tired of feeling my bones hurting. I was tired of headaches, cold sweats and all that” from a 17 yr old.

Club Drugs and Others… • Teens admit using Ketamine, Oxycotin, over the counter “Triple C’s”, Parents prescription medicines as well as Inhalants. • * 8th grade -- 30.3%  * 10th grade -- 44.9%  * 12th grade -- 52.8% • Parents have felt that their teen's alcohol use is OK, because it isn't a harder drug like crack, or heroin. • Teens sometime are Waking in a stupor after the previous night's party, missing classes, falling behind and resort to failure at everything they do.

Projected Long-Term Effects • 4+gr/day of acetaminophen → liver damage • 6+gr/day of acetaminophen → liver failure • 8gr+ of acetaminophen → acute liver failure • One study has shown that acetaminophen induced acute liver failure has a 27% mortality rate • Long-term “cheese” usage will predictably result in an abnormally high percentage of liver disease and acute liver failure
