Location • Freshwater refers to lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, and bottles of water. • Freshwater counts for nearly 1% of all the water on the planet Earth. • You can find freshwater almost anywhere, excluding deserts and oceans. http://www.thewildclassroom.com/biomes/FRESHWATER.html
Abiotic Factors • Climate: Its water. Figure it out. • Average Rainfall: See Climate. • Average High-Low Temp.: Can range from 4 degrees Celsius at the bottom and 22 degrees Celsius at the top. The temperature of the water will always be 4 degrees Celsius during Winters. • Seasonal Changes: During Winters most Freshwater can freeze over due to the decrease of temperature in the atmosphere due to the tilt of the Earth on its Axis at 23 degrees in either direction depending on the location of the Freshwater while rotating around a star known formally as the sun. http://www.thewildclassroom.com/biomes/FRESHWATER.html
Organisms Within Biome The Amazon River In the Portuguese speaking country named the Federative Republic of Brazil • River Dolphin • Arowana
“Boto” (Amazon River Dolphin)Iniageoffrensis • Adaptations: fused vertebrae in its neck- To catch fish more easily, a fluke on it’s back- For increased mobility in shallow water, and echolocation- For finding prey and avoiding objects.
“Dragon Fish” (Arowana) Osteoglossumbicirrhosum • Adaptations: draw-bridge-like mouth- To easily swallow prey, relatively large scales- For protection against predators, and a tapered tail- To jump out of the water. Can cost thousands of dollars
Community Interactions Predator prey: Arowana Insects Like This!
Community Interactions Intraspecific completion: River Dolphin Vs. River Dolphin for mating. Mating Ritual
Community Interactions Interspecific completion: Arowana and birds competing for bugs.
Symbiosis Symbiosis Parasitism- Amazon River Dolphin Vampire Fish
Symbiosis Commensalism- Giant River Turtle and algae on its shell.
Symbiosis Mutualism- Algae produces food for itself while fungus takes in water for itself and the algae
Endangerment #1 The Amazon river dolphin is considered an endangered species. • The dolphin has lived in harmony with the people of the Amazon for centuries, however, urban development, economic changes, water pollution and environmental pollution created by us has poisoned and killed the dolphins.
Endangerment #2 The poison dart frog is considered a endangered species. • Today, many species of poison dart frogs are considered to be critically endangered in the wild, mainly due to pollution and habitat loss
Econiches • If the Amazon river dolphin went extinct, the rivers would become overpopulated with fish. These fish would eat all of the algae, causing a reduction in oxygen in the water. If there was no oxygen in the water, cellular respiration could not take place and all of the animals in the river would die. • If the Poison Dart Frog were to go extinct, the insect population would increase exponentially. With more insects there would be fewer plants in the area. If the plants are gone other herbivores would not be able to get enough energy and die of starvation.
