  12. Requirement #1 Be active in your troop, team, or crew for a period of at least six months as a Life Scout.

  13. Requirement #2 Demonstrate that you live by the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law in your everyday life.

  14. Requirement #3 Earn a minimum of 21 merit badges.

  15. Requirement #4 While a Life Scout, serve actively for a period of six (6) months in one or more positions of Leadership.

  16. Requirement #5“The EAGLE Project” While a Life Scout, plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a Service Project helpful to any religious institution, school, or non-profit organization in your community.

  22. The Eagle Project Getting Started • The project is to be done “While a life Scout….” • Get a copy of the Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbook • Get a notebook and record events as they happen. • Plan, Organize, Plan, Direct, Plan, and Lead!

  23. The Eagle Project • Selecting an Eagle Project: • The project must demonstrate YOUR leadership to others • Choose a project that you will be proud of for the rest of your life. • What will you say twenty years from now when someone asks you about your project?

The Eagle Project • Selecting an Eagle Project: • The project is to be: “…helpful to any religious institution, any school, or your community….” • The Organization must be non-profit. • The project should be of Significant Magnitude to be special and represent the candidate’s best possible efforts.

The Eagle Project • Pre-Planning: • With the help of your Troop leaders and your Troop Eagle Advisor…agree on a project - the concept must be approved by your troop committee • Begin detail planning and initial project write-up • Your write-up may be typed on a typewriter or computer, or may be hand written.

The Eagle Project • The Project Write-Up: • Neat … appearance is important • Eliminate the text boxes and white-space • Use single space - minimize the number of pages to be copied • Proper grammar - No typos or misspelled words. You will need an editor, someone to help you improve the written communication, so use your Eagle Advisor

  30. The Eagle Project The Project Write-Up: • High level summary • Who will benefit • Present situation • Relevant history

The Eagle Project • Planning Details: Your plan should include all details needed to carry out your project to completion • Step by step instructions/timeline • Pictures, drawings, designs • Materials, supplies, tools, permits • Schedules, posters, permission slips • Financial plan – how is your project funded

The Eagle Project Step by Step Instructions: • Your instructions should read like a recipe in a cookbook or instructions in an assembly manual telling your volunteers exactly what to do • Include a list of every task you can think of, what order they will be done in, and who will do them Your plan should be written in such a way that anyone could read it and complete your project without you being there.

  33. The Eagle Project • Attachments: Your plan should include all details needed to carry out your project to completion • Printed materials, emails • Volunteer sign-up sheets • Transportation issues, maps • Adult supervision and safety

  34. The Eagle Project • Adult Supervision: • BSA policy requires at least … • two adult leaders at all times • one adult with “Youth Protection” Certification Do NOT assume that the right people will ‘be there’, recruit them and plan for it

The Eagle Project • Safety: • List precautions that must be taken and any safety concerns: • Use of power tools • Emergency contact phone numbers • Readily available drinking water • Scheduled breaks • Ventilation when painting • Protective equipment, Etc. Where is the first aid kit? Who is the trained first aid person?

The Eagle Project • The Project Approval: • Four (4) signatures are required before you begin your project • Organization Official (sponsor) • Your Scoutmaster • Your Troop Committee Chair • Mustang District Advancement Chair(ME) The approval process can take 2 to 3 weeks to complete. Do NOT try to rush this process!

The Eagle Project The FINAL Project Write-Up: • The Project is not complete until you finish the Final Report. • Describe what happened, what went right, and what went wrong. • Emphasize: • Your leadership • Your planning • Your organization of project details • Your direction of leadership (instruction and direction of volunteers) • Use strong statements such as “I said…” “I decided…” and “I think…”

The Eagle Project • The FINAL Project Write-Up: Provide an Appendix with the following documents: • Time Log (List your volunteers - what day and how long each day they participated.) • Tools, equipment, charts, & diagrams • Financial information - money spent, goods, services • Photographs: Before, During, After

Putting it All Together • Your presentation must include the following: • Letters of Recommendation: • Minimum of Five letters required, only employer letter is optional • List of references for letters of recommendation are from the candidate's Eagle rank application. • The Troop Advancement Chair solicits the letters of Recommendation.

  49. Eagle Board of Review • Important things to Remember: • The EBOR will NOT be scheduled until AFTER the application has been certified by Northern Star Council. Certification can take from 8 to 10 days & the Originals will be returned to the Troop Advancement Chair. • The Troop Advancement Chair must notify the MDAC that the application has been certified, forwards the original documents to the MDAC & the MDAC can now schedule an EBOR • The Mustang District Advancement Chair (MDAC) schedules all Eagle Board of Reviews (EBOR).
