CHEE 331/332/333 Design and Scaleupof Unit Operations Course Instructors: Dr. Kontopoulou (chee 331) (Process Option) Dr. Neufeld (chee 332) (Biochemical Option) Dr. Cunningham (chee 333) (Engineering Chemistry) Tutorial sessions will start in week 2. Course Delivery and Scheduling: 1. Joint lectures (331/332/333) 3 times weekly. 2. Dr. Neufeld will cover Mass Transfer operations (Design for Distillation and Solvent Extraction), Dr. Cunningham will cover Scaleup of Chemical Processes, and Dr. Kontopoulou will cover Heat Transfer operations (Design of Heat Exchanges). 3. Individual section tutorials weekly (331 or 332 or 333), to be conducted by individual instructors and TAs.
CHEE 331/332/333 Scaleup and Design of Unit Operations 4. For all class sections (331, 332 and 333), there are 3 class based design assignments, based on lecture sections for each professor. 5. For each class section there will be one term length design project, specific to the class section. Design project will be presented and run through the tutorial sessions. 6. Students will form design working groups of 3 students/group during the first tutorial session. Students will work in their design groups for both class based assignments, and for term length design project. 7. It is important that members of the design teams contribute equally to the design assignments and project. If problems emerge, they are more easily corrected if brought to attention of instructors as early in term as possible. 8. Students not contributing in meaningful way to design assignments and design project will not receive a grade for the assignment/project.
CHEE 331/332/333 Scaleup and Design of Unit Operations 9. Class based design assignments will be assigned during the class lectures for each instructor, when students have sufficient background to tackle the assignment. Due dates will be explained at the time that the assignment is assigned. 10. Term length design project will start in week 2 during the tutorial, and will be due on the second last Friday of the term (March 28). 11. Custom CourseWare required for course, available in bookstore. 12. Assessment: Joint lectures: Each instructor will give one class assignment (10%) plus one quiz (10%) Total of 20% for each instructor’s lectures = 60% of total mark Term length design report worth 40% of total mark Good news: No final exam Bad news: Students must pass quizzes to pass the course 13. Neufeld and Cunningham – Review of Quiz 1 and 2 Mar. 20-Apr. 4 (2.5 weeks): Prof. Kontopoulou, Heat Transfer Operations (Heat Exchangers) Apr. 3: Quiz 3 tentatively scheduled for April 3
