Accelerated Remediation Is Faster Better?
Ivy Tech Community College Northeast (Fort Wayne) Karen Reilly Dean, ASA and Support Programs Joan Smith ASA Case Manager Kris Roberts ASA Math Program Chair Christopher Spradlin ASA English Department Chair
Accelerated Remediation is… • The ability to pass two levels of remediation in a term • 8-week course offerings • M/W, T/R, W/F, M/T/W/R • Fall (062, 072, 082) • Spring (063, 073, 083) • MATH040, MATH044, MATH050, ENGL024 and ENGL025 • An opportunity made possible through the statewide Lilly Remediation Grant
Recruit and Educate Prospective Students • Use Compass scores – open enrollment • Make calls and send letters/brochures • Explain accelerated classes • Identify potential barriers to success
Educate New Students • Send a Welcome Letter • Visit Accelerated Classes
Improve Retention • Implement “Early Alert” system • Establish Guidelines • Use Referral Form • Contact Students • Follow-Up With Faculty
Improve Retention • Provide assistance for students facing difficult life circumstances • Collaborate with other departments • Provide Student Success Workshops
ASA Math Curriculum Used 8 week summer curriculum One instructor required My Math Lab while other instructors encouraged students to use MML
Course Offerings • Currently ASA Math offers 2 sets of accelerated courses – Math 040/044 and Math 044/050 • Courses are offered during the day as well as in the evening • Courses are offered 2 days a week for 3 hours each day or 4 days a week for 1hour and 15 minutes each day • A cohort group of students was attempted but did not prove to be beneficial
Instruction • Supplemental instructors were utilized in accelerated classes • In order to teach an accelerated course the instructor must have been a supplemental instructor • Instructors and Supplemental Instructors need to be chosen carefully
Challenges • Financial Aid – Needed to provide a student who fails the 1st 8 weeks course with a 2nd 8 week course in order to meet financial aid requirements • Enrolling the correct students in the course- make sure the students are prepared for the fast pace. Case Manager does an excellent job.
Results • Success Rates • Indicated buy a grade of C or better in the course • Passing two levels of remediation in one term • Retention Based on withdrawal rates • Persistence Students’ performance at the program level
Fall 062 through Fall 082 Number of students that have taken accelerated… • MATH040 = 53 • MATH044 = 368 • MATH050 = 254 • ENGL024 = 166 • ENGL025 = 93
Students Passing Two Levels of Remediation in a Term* • MATH040 and MATH044 = 62% • MATH044 and MATH050 = 66% • ENGL024 and ENGL025 = 64% *Of those attempting two courses, does not reflect all accelerated students
Why We Think it Works… • The ability to focus over eight weeks is better than over sixteen • The fast pace keeps students engaged • Attendance is excellent, they keep up with the work • Students are excited about making progress and reducing their time spent in remedial courses
What We Know For Sure… • Remediation works very well for some students • Support mechanisms are necessary • There is a large demand for accelerated courses (30% of total next Fall) • A certain kind of instructor is required • Open enrollment works • Logistic hurdles need to be dealt with • Financial Aid • What if student isn’t eligible for 2nd 8 weeks but needs to be full time…
