  3. 1. 25 years CLATJUPAM experience • In Latin America and the Caribbean • at the level of grass root seniors’, retirees’ and pensioners’ organizations, • “Central Latinoamericano y del Caribe de Trabajadores Jubilados, Pensionados y Adultos Mayores” • (CLATJUPAM the former CLATJUP)” • was established 25 years ago in July 1989.

Internal Cooperation between affiliated organizations • Since 2007 attention for the implementation of the Madrid International Action Plan on Aging • its main objective : realization of all human rights for older persons by 2012. • Cooperation between national federations of retirees, pensioners and older persons • structured internally more on a subregional basis • (Caribbean region, Central American region, Andino region, Conosur-region) • not so much on a bilateral basis.

Internal Cooperation CLATJUPAM Regional seminars • to update leadership of the national federations • they on their turn updated leadership of the grass roots organizations Regional Meetings • Struggle and Action Plan CLATJUPAM adopted and implemented • Challenge: cost for each national federation to send representatives to a regional seminar or meeting still remains a challenge Boletin Digital CLATJUPAM

External Cooperation with Civil Society • executive board members CLATJUPAM contributed to • civil society meetings of LAC on aging • Intergovernmental follow up meetings on the Brasilia Declaration of 2007. • CORV Strategy 2012-2017, declarations, publications of Civil Society organizations now drafted with input of CLATJUPAM. • representatives of national federations of grass root organizations affiliated to CLATJUPAM • During work sessions input provided based upon their experience in the struggle for the realizations of the rights of older persons.

  7. 2. 16 years CORV experience • Latin American and Caribbean Regional Coordination of Civil Society Organizations on Aging (CORV) • Network of organizations, institutions, individuals • addressing the struggle for the rights of older persons since 1998.

Internal Cooperation • more on a regional than on a bilateral basis. • Sharing of experience of civil society organizations in other countries through : • online virtual discussion forum where ideas, proposals on rights of older persons are being shared and discussed (mayoresDDHH.suscribir@gmail.com ) • quarterly virtual bulletin “Envejecer con derechos” created since march 2009 (envejecerconderechos@gmail.com) • organization of regional meetings coordinated by CORV • CORV publications

  9. 2.2 External Cooperation of CORV • Since 2012 • Developing strategic alliances • with other civil society organizations on aging • continental and • Intercontinental • With multilateral agencies • Regional meetings, conferences • World level meetiings, conferences, forums

Cooperation in subregion Caribbean Role of ABVO Council of Pensioners • founding and developing National organizations of seniors and pensioners grass roots organizations • Curacao Confederation of Seniors and Pensioners (KOPAMKO, 2007) • Sint Maarten Seniors and Pensioners Association (SMSPA, 2010)

Role of KOPAMKO (bilateral) • Supported social organizations of Sint Maarten (jan 2011) • During Inter Parliamentary Kingdom Consultation of Parliamentarians of the Kingdom of the Netherlands • Provided SMSPA all correpsondence they with Kingdom government in struggle for equal old age pensions in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Role of KOPAMKO (regional) • As civil society delegate in delegation of Netherlands Antilles • At regional follow up meetings on Brasilia Declaration of 2007 (Rio de Janeiro 2008, Buenos Aires 2009, Santiago de Chile 2010) • at First World Conference of Organizations of Pensioners where KOPAMKO resolutions adopted (Brasilia, Oct 2010) • organized and hosted First Dutch Caribbean Seminar on aging • For seniors organizations from Curacao, Aruba and Sint Maarten.(july 2011). • Hosted LAC seminar and VI CLATJUPAM congress • For LAC national federations affiliated to CLATJUPAM (nov-dec 2011).

  13. 4.1 Opportunity on national level • recognition from governments of LAC • input from the civil society organizations on aging • coordinated by CORV OBJECTIVE: To increase compliance of national governments with what was signed by them in 2007 and 2012. NOW civil society organizations in each country can: • follow up with their respective governments • on the civil society commitment of the Tres Rios Declaration • To monitor the intergovernmental agreement of the San Jose Charter on the rights of Older Persons. • Share best practices developed by each organization

  14. 4.2 Opportunity on regional + world level • recognition received from Multilateral agencies : • Interamerican regional level (ECLAC) • International world level (UN/CDS, UN DESA, UN OHCHR) • input from civil society organizations on aging • coordinated by the CORV, OBJECTIVE: to guarantee CORV input in the process of developing binding instruments for the protection of the Rights of Older Persons. • more input can be expected and shared on the national level • sharing best practices to realize rights of older persons. • It is hoped that the OAS and the UN multilateral organizations will provide structural participation

Bilateral Cooperation • Alzheimer Disease International • world federation of national Alzheimer’s associations • established in … • to promote cooperation and support among the associations • to address the care needs of persons with dementia and their family members. • Bilateral cooperation within ADI has been promoted by twinning programs.

Twinning program in the America’s for sharing knowledge and skills between Alzheimer associations to address dementia epidemic • between Canadian Alzheimer Association and Trinidad & Tobago Alzheimer Association. • Aruba Alzheimer Foundation provided bilateral cooperation and support to establish Alzheimer Foundation in Sint Maarten (2009-2010). • Sint Maarten Alzheimer Foundation now supporting : • existing (non-Latin Caribbean Alzheimer organizations) and • new to establish Alzheimer organizations in the America’s (Belize, Tortola (BVI), Grenada)

  19. 6.1. Alzheimer Iberoamericano (AIB) • Organizes annual regional conferences on Dementia • Providing opportunity to the Latin speaking region to get the latest updates on dementia care developments and research. • See their website at http://alzheimeriberoamerica.org/

  20. 6.2 Central American Alzheimer Associations (COMCAEDA) • With support of Alzheimer Association Costa Rica • organized two annual multidisciplinary conferences • I Consensus : structuring COMCAEDA • II Consensus : draft regional strategy on dementia. • See their website http://www.comcaeda.org/

Coalition of Caribbean Alzheimer Organizations (non-Latin) Sint Maarten Alzheimer Foundation hosted first Alzheimer University (with ADI) for the non-Latin speaking Caribbean Alzheimer Organizations => Caribbean Dementia Newsletter • Coalition Caribbean Alzheimer Organizations • has to coordinate cooperation • Support developmental needs of existing and new to be established national Alzheimer organizations. • will be formalized at upcoming ADI Annual Conference in Puerto Rico.

  22. 7. Opportunity bilateral cooperation for dementia

  23. 7.1. Strategic Alliances in the region Caribbean Dementia Awareness Advocacy Alliance (CDAAA) • to raise the Awareness on dementia, especially in those Caribbean countries where there is not yet an Alzheimer organization established affiliated to Alzheimer Disease international. • In cooperation with Rotary Club SXM, Lions Club SXM, Indian Merchant Association (IMA) • Signed between Chairman of Alzheimer Disease International and Caribbean District Governors of Rotary International District 7020 and Lions District 60B

  24. 7.2. bilateral cooperation It is hoped that AIB, COMCAEDA, Coalition Caribbean Alzheimer Organizations • will get participation at the national and regional ministerial levels (Mercosur, ALBA, PactoAndina, COMISCA, CARICOM, OAS) • Will assist governments in addressing the prioritization of dementia. • By sharing experiences cause of dementia in each country will be enhanced
