Cutting Tools Scissors Shears Used to cut pattern pieces from fabric Usually longer The handles are not the same size-shaped to fit your hand Bent-handled shears are the most popular • Used to clip around curves, trim seams, and clip threads • Usually short • Handles have small, matching holes

  3. Cutting Tools • Rotary Cutter • Round blade-like a pizza cutter • Blade retracts for safety • Good for cutting straight lines • Must be used with self-healing mat. • Intended for quilting not typicalbasic sewing projects

  4. Cutting Tools • Seam Ripper • Used to remove stitches • Hook like blade • Must be careful not to cut fabric

  5. Measuring Tools • Tape Measure • Used for taking body measurements or measuring fabric

  6. Measuring Tools • Sewing/Seam Gauge • 6-inch ruler with sliding marker • Used to measure hems, seam widths, cuffs, space between buttons and other short distances.

  7. Marking Tools • Dressmakers Carbon Paper and Tracing Wheel • Used to transfer markings • Fabric Marking Pens • Disappearing Ink • Water Soluble • Evaporating • Tailor’s Chalk • Chalk marks can usually be brushed away

Needles Used to pull thread through cloth • Many different sizes • Needles with low numbers are used for heavier fabrics • Needles with higher numbers are used for fine fabrics • Number 7 or 8 needles are most commonly used • Three types of needles • Sharps • Most often used for hand sewing tasks • Betweens • Short needles with a small eye • Crewel/Embroidery • Have large eyes

Pins • Pins are used for temporary basting of fabric. • Used to hold patterns in place while cutting and to hold fabrics together while stitching • It is not recommended to machine sew over pins as they have been known to break your sewing machine needle, jam the machine, or cause other problems.

  10. Other Sewing Equipment • Pincushion • Holds pins in a safe place • NEVER PUT PINS IN YOUR MOUTH • Thimble • Protective device for your middle finger when doing hand sewing.

Other Sewing Equipment • Notions - items other than fabric that become part of the product • Thread • Zippers • Buttons • Snaps • Thread - Fine cord of a fibrous material (Cotton) that is twisted together and used in needlework of cloth • Polyester/Cotton • All-purpose thread • Can be used for almost all fabric
