  19. Threading the Machine - The NeedleThreading the machine is one the most crucial parts of sewing. Most sewing machine problems are a result of incorrect threading. If the machine is not threaded correctly, the sewing machine will not sew. Threading the Machine • Lick fingers and run over the eye of the needle and the end of the thread. • Tip: Thread the needle from the front to the back. Changing the Needle • Show students how to change the needle if it becomes bent, broken or dull. • Lower the presser foot. • Unscrew the needle from the needle shaft. Hold onto the needle as you do this. • Remove the old needle and throw it away. • Replace with a new needle. The flat side of the needle always goes towards the back of the machine. • Make sure the needle is all the way in; tighten the screw down

Threading the Machine - Bobbin . Winding the Bobbin • Need a thread spool and bobbin. • Disengage the hand wheel. • Put thread on the spool pin, and the bobbin on the bobbin winder. • Follow the arrows on the machine to thread the bobbin. • Lock the bobbin into place on the bobbin winder. • Wind the bobbin. • Re-engage the hand wheel. • Unlock the bobbin. The bobbin and bobbin case • Put the bobbin in the bobbin case clockwise. When you pull on the thread, the bobbin will turn clockwise. • Thread it through the bobbin case. The teacher needs to check everyone off at this point. • Put the bobbin case into the machine; you will hear it click into place. • Demonstrate how to pull bobbin thread up.
