Environment & Sustainability Concerns Unveiling of BHU Environmental Calendar by the Hon’ble President on 14th March, 2009 A new Institute of Environment & Sustainable Development: Foundation laying by His Excellency Shri B.L. Joshi, Governor of Uttar Pradesh on 30th December, 2009 Establishment of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Chair for sustainable agriculture and rural development
BHU Policy on Environment & Sustainable Development • Released by Hon’ble Chancellor, Dr. Karan Singh on 25th December, 2009 (Malaviya Jayanti). • Policy sets out the principles, priority areas and procedures for implementation, management and evaluation of the environment plan for the university. • Priority areas: • Energy • Water • Waste Management • Building & Estate • Transport • Sustainable Resource Acquisition • University Environment Management System • Environmental Education, Training, Awareness
Initiatives for Eco-friendly Campus • Modernization of garbage collection and disposal system by segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and use of garbage compactors for reducing volume • Guidelines to every faculty and institute of the university to have provision for separation of degradable and non-degradable waste for appropriate disposal by BHU Sanitary and Support Services • Burning of fallen tree leaves completely banned on campus • Composting of organic waste including flowers and other offerings from Kashi Vishwanath Temple
Solar Water Heaters • Solar water heaters in all hostels in phased manner-girls hostels completed, boys hostels going on • Solar water heaters in Emergency unit of SS Hospital
Rain Water Harvesting • Provision for rain water harvesting in all the new buildings • Restoration of ponds and creation of new ones
Tree Plantations Planting of 400 acres of trees at the Rajiv Gandhi South Campus of BHU in order to make university carbon neutral
Future Initiatives • Establishment of community solar cookers for day time cooking in hostels • Biogas generation from food waste of hostel mess, use of resulting gas for cooking and residual compost for flower beds • Reuse of treated grey water of hostel bathrooms for irrigation of lawns and flower beds • Solar Energy & Energy efficient lighting systems • ISO 14000 compliant University EMS
