  2. WHY use quotes? Journalism has a terrible reputation of bias. Using quotes gives a sense that OTHERS hold the same opinion. Originally, intent was used to show that a belief is widely held.

  3. Direct Quotes EXACTLY what a person says Adds different opinions and perspectives. LEGITIMIZES the information. It cannot be interpreted or reflected upon. It is precise.

  4. Indirect Quotes Translates the information into a different form Calls for interpretation – less trustable. Be certain if you rewrite any quote – KEEP INFORMATION IDENTICAL.

  5. WHY use an indirect quote? If the source is very technical – and difficult to interpret or understand.

  6. WHY use an indirect quote? If the source keeps speaking for a LONG time – and needs to be edited. No need to repeat the last video again, right?

  7. W use an indirect quote? If the source is unintelligible, or uses VERY poor grammar.

  8. Be certain to vary quotes. All direct or all indirect quotes makes writing seem dull. If you plan to only use one type, use all DIRECT quotes. Ratio should be 2:1 direct:indirect
