Subject vs Object • Example=Our teacher gave us homework to do. • Subject=teacher • Object=homework • Explanation= A subject acts and the object is being acted upon. • The teacher(subject) is giving (verb) us (object) homework to do. • Another way to learn is to find the verb first and find out what it is acting out against to.

  3. Example • The old lady bit the old lady man. • Verb=bit • Who got bit? The old man did. So he was being acted upon by being bit. So the old man is the object and the old lady is the subject.

  4. Indirect Object vs Direct Object • The direct object receives the verb. While the indirect object receives the direct object. • I sold the house. I sold the house(direct object). • I sold my mom the house. I sold the house (direct object)to my mom(indirect object).

  5. What helped me? If you were able to add words a sentence and make it complete. Jessica told a lie. Jessica (subject) told a lie(direct object). Jessica told Andrew a lie. Jessica (subject) told Andrew(indirect object) a lie (direct object).

  6. More examples • Tony gave a diamond ring. Tony (subject) gave a diamond a ring(direct object) • Tony gave Melissa a diamond ring. Tony(subject) gave Melissa(indirect object) a diamond ring (direct object). • The teacher gave out pizza today. The teacher(subject) gave out pizza(direct object) today. • The teacher gave all the students pizza today. The teacher(subject) gave all the students(indirect object) pizza (direct object) today.
