  2. Wisconsin communities are interested in effective justice strategies that … • promote public safety, • reduce costs, incarceration and recidivism, • address criminal and addictive behaviors.

  3. Why are Effective Justice Strategies Important? • Escalating costs of prisons, jails and overall criminal justice system • Overcrowding of prisons and jails • Increased accountability and the need to effectively manage limited resources • Impact on the family and community

  4. Criminal Justice Collaborating Councils • Organizing a local Criminal Justice Collaborating Council (CJCC) is an important first step in developing effective justice strategies. • CJCC is a forum for local justice system professionals and community leaders to come together and focus on justice system improvements and initiatives.

Criminal Justice Collaborating Councils • Structure, title, size, and makeup of these groups is determined locally and dependent on the need and circumstances of the local community. • Important players include: Judge - Sheriff - County Board member - County Executive/Administrator - County Human Services - Corrections - Public Defender - District Attorney - Clerk of Courts, …

Criminal Justice Collaborating Councils • CJCC’s are the foundation for developing effective justice strategies such as drug courts and other problem solving practices in the justice system. • State level collaboration and support is necessary. • Legislators can play an important role in these collaborations.

Assess, Inform, Measure (AIM) Project(handout) Project of the court system’s Effective Justice Strategies subcommittee… Goals: • More information to judges prior to sentencing (risk, needs, responsivity and community assessment). • Blending known ‘best practices’ to information provided to the court for decision-making • Providing information back to court about outcomes of individual.
