Vision of Education - 2017 Jeanine Affie EDU 505.91 Jennifer Wojcik
History and Current State • For Profit Post-Secondary Career School • Founded in 1965, includes campuses in 6 states • Offers day and evening classes • Population is primarily inner city and parolees • Minimal requirement is high school diploma or GED for entrance • Offers programs in Medical Assistant, Health Claims Specialist, Paralegal, Computer Networking, Professional Fitness Training, and Massage Therapy
Current Technology • Currently using learning analytics • Used to analyze the wealth of information about students in a way that allowed the school to make informed adjustments to a student’s learning experience (Horizon Report, 2012)
Futuring Techniques • Futuring combines scientific thinking with rigorous yet imaginative analysis to produce reports, forecasts, and scenarios about what lies ahead (Clardy, 2011) • Schools and teachers must continue to look foreword to see the best way to help students, both academically and socially
Lanfield in 2017 • On-line, self-directed environment • Only on-ground courses will be hands-on/clinical • All basic computer classes will be on-line
Technologies for the Future • On line learning - students have the flexibility to learn in a more relaxed atmosphere (ex. home, library) • Blended learning - gives students face to face access to teachers and allows them flexibility to get assignments done in a separate location • Self-directed learning - students learn at their own pace. Don’t feel as pressured by rest of class
Challenges • Students do not have access to computers outside of school • Students with little to no computer experience will struggle • Student retention will decrease during implementation period
Opportunities • School will be able to reach new student markets across all generations by expanding the accessibility of educational programs (Betts, Hartman, & Oxholm, 2009) • Students will have flexibility to work in other locations • Operating costs will decrease
Preparation • Admissions office will start informing perspective students of new programs • New syllabi will need to be written along with new curricula • Technology needs to be updated. Ex. Servers and internet • Teachers will need to be trained on LMS
Current Action Needed • Use the current software for basic computer classes to fullest to start on-line courses • Inform new students starting all computer classes will be on-line • Train teachers on all aspects of LMS not just what is currently being used
