  1. Earth Science Week • http://www.earthsciweek.org/whatisesw/index.html

  2. Mass Movement Changing Earth’s Surface

  3. Review • Weathering • Erosion • Soils

  4. Cycle of Erosion and Deposition • What is a cycle? What are some cycles? • Deposition – the agents of erosion deposit sediment • Sediment – material moved by erosion

  5. Cycle of Erosion and Deposition • The cycle that wears down and builds up Earth’s surface.

  6. 5 Agents of Erosion • Gravity • Running water • Glaciers • Waves • Winds

  7. Mass Movement • One of several processes that move sediment downhill. • Can be very fast or very slow • Gravity!!!

  8. Mass Movement • Landslide • Mudflow • Slump • Creep • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mknStAMia0Q

  9. Landslides • Most destructive • Rock and soil slide quickly down a steep slope

  10. Mudflows • Rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water, rock, and soil. • Occur after heavy rains in a normally dry area.

  11. Slump • Stand up straight, arms at your side • Slump your shoulders • What happened? • A mass of rock and soil suddenly slips down a slope.

  12. Slump • This is different from a land slide • The material moves down in a large mass.

  13. Creep • You tell me!!

  14. Creep • The very slow downhill movement of rock and soil • Can occur on any slope
