  1. David Oram University of East Anglia, UK Relevant areas of expertise • GC-MS measurements of halocarbons (primarily canister sampling) • Cape Grim, Mace Head • CARIBIC • Research aircraft (BAe-146) • Also GC-ECD and GC-FID experience • PTR-MS measurements of selected VOC and OVOCs • Weybourne Observatory (semi-continuous since late 2002) • Research aircraft (BAe-146) • Acetone, methanol, aromatics, isoprene, terpenes + others WEYBOURNE Atmospheric Observatory • Established 1992/3 (West Beckham 1989-91) • UEA NMHC record for 1989-1995 (canisters, GC-FID) • UEA took part in AMOHA, NOMHICE • Partner in EU HANSA network • Semi-continuous PTR-MS data since late 2002 • New VOC instrument planned for 2006 • Full-time manager (B. Bandy) • Supported by NERC-UFAM

  2. Current Instrumentation at WAO • NO/NO2/NOy (Annox, Teco 42S) • Ozone • SO2 • CO • H2 • HCHO • CN • PTRMS • WAO Met: AWS • LAN/Data Network • Remote Access Not continuous • H2O2 • PAN • Canister sampling New Instrumentation (2006) • CO2 • Vertical sounder/profiler • GC ECD/FID (CH4 and N2O) • GC FID/FID (VOC/oVOC)

  3. Acetone at Weybourne (ppb) January May - June October

  4. Toluene at Weybourne (ppb) January May - June October

  5. Questions/Comments • What was outcome of previous (1995) VOC meeting ? • How have measurements/technology improved since 1995 ? • NOMHICE, AMOHA, (others ?) • Summary of recommendations Proposed compounds • Need GC-MS (or ECD?) for halocarbons • CH3CN by FID ? • How to measure CH2O ? Standards • Do world standards exist for TCE/PCE, CH3CN, oxygenates ? • Are gas phase OVOC standards currently good enough ? Canister sampling • Which compounds are stable? • Oxygenates, terpenes ? • Which surface is best? • SS, silcosteel, glass (humidity effects) • Further testing may be required Safety and legality • Canisters/cylinders used for sampling and standards need to conform to latest regulations. • Transportable pressurised containers • US DOT or EU pi mark not globally accepted ?
