Preparation • Vertical planning between Earth Science, Biology and Chemistry teachers at FVSH. • Software/hardware logistics: receipt of licenses, installation in computer lab within the Media Center and set calendar for use of computer lab. • Student trainers selected and prepared for their role within the project.

  5. Introduction to GPS/GIS • Lecture on GPS and GIS basicsSlide show of summer Everglades GIS field trip and data collection using GLX units from Pasco • Prepared a review of icons used in GIS: My World software.

Computer Lab Intro. to Google Earth • My World was not installed in all the student computers (image erased). • Google Earth was used to introduce basic GIS skills: navigation, flying , marking places and layering. • Students located latitude and longitude of their home, the school, landmarks in the city the state and the boundaries of the Everglades area.

  11. “Inquiry Lesson into My World” • My World license key had to be typed into each computer. • Data files were not all loaded. Structured Lesson Inquiry Lesson • Students learned basic navigation and manipulation of action tabs on My World • Practiced the retrieval and loading of data files from the library to create layers. • Explored different types of maps available. • Shared maps with class mates.
