Development data gaps

This article explores the background and causes of data gaps in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. It discusses the data quality and building blocks in Africa, as well as the average statistical capacity score and government statistical capacity. The article also maps SDGs data gaps and analyzes Africa's SDGs performance. Lastly, it addresses the main challenges for monitoring SDGs and proposes strategies for addressing data gaps in Africa's sustainable development efforts.

  2. CONTENT • Background • Data quality • Data building blocks in Africa • Average statistical capacity score • Government statistical capacity • Mapping SDGs data gaps • Africa SDGs performance • Data commitment • Main challenges for monitoring SDGs • Addressing SDGs data gaps

  3. BACKGROUND Data gaps-voids in our knowledge of the world and the people and communities who live in it. They restrict our ability to understand the steps we need to take to achieve progress and measure the impact of our work.

  4. CAUSES DATA QUALITY

  5. DATA QUALITY Cts • Data for monitoring SDGs from NSOs is collected at an interval of five years (mainly through household surveys) • Most SDG monitoring reports rely on projections • e.gin countries without data or with data of insufficient quality, estimates are calculated using statistical models.

  6. DATA BUILDING BLOCKS IN AFRICA

  7. AVERAGE STATISTICAL CAPACITY SCORES

  8. GOVERNMENTAL STATISTICAL CAPACITY(2018)

  9. Data commitment Number of indicators per tier SDGs tier % classification • 101 Tier I indicators with standard methodology • 84 Tier II indicators have standard methodology but data not regularly collected • 41Tier III indicators without internationally established methodology and standards) • 6 indicators with multiple tiers Source; United Nations Statistics Division, 2019

  10. GAPS IN SDGs DATA • Key messages: • There is no updated data • Countries are not collecting SDG official data • For many goals indicators are still measured with pre SDG era data

  11. MAIN CHALLENGES FOR MONITORING SDGs

  12. ADRESSING SDGs DATA GAPS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

  13. ADRESSING SDGs DATA GAPS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT cts Need for; Reliable, efficient and quality data that is; • Time-bound • Adherence to standards Showcasing the inequalities; • Among groups of people • Between two different gender • Within different geographical areas.
