Who Influenced Galileo? • Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543) was the first person to state that the sun was in the center of the universe. • Went against what the Church taught.
Ptolemy says “No way, Jose!” • Ptolemy lived 1500 years before Galileo. • The Church said that he was right in his theory (thoughts) that the Earth is in the center of the universe.
The Church even put Galileo on trial for supporting the belief that the planets revolved around the sun!

Catholic Church • Galileo found guilty of breaching the Inquisition of 1616 and sentenced to lifelong imprisonment • Allowed house arrest rather than imprisonment • On 31 October 1992 Pope John Paul II spoke on behalf of the Catholic Church admitting the theological advisors had made errors, but did not admit that the Church was wrong to convict Galileo on a charge of heresy because they were acting according to the best of their knowledge
