  3. Used the telescope to prove Copernicus’ theory. Church banned his book. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) Italian Scientist

  4. Who Influenced Galileo? • Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543) was the first person to state that the sun was in the center of the universe. • Went against what the Church taught.

  5. HELIOCENTRIC: The sun is in the center of the universe.

  6. Ptolemy says “No way, Jose!” • Ptolemy lived 1500 years before Galileo. • The Church said that he was right in his theory (thoughts) that the Earth is in the center of the universe.

  7. GEOCENTRIC: Earth is in the center of the universe.

  8. The Church even put Galileo on trial for supporting the belief that the planets revolved around the sun!
