DO NOW • On a separate sheet of white lined paper, please respond to the following question in 1 paragraph: • What do you think it would be like to live in a country with an “official” religion, one which everyone must support or go to prison? • Why is separation of church and state become a fundamental constitutional issue?

Problems with Protestants • 1500s- Henry VIII makes Church of England • Protestant in name only, rituals are still heavily Catholic • Controlled by the Crown • Why is this a problem for Protestants? • People want to purify the church • Become known as Puritans (or Separatists) • Puritans are viewed as a threat • WHY?

  8. Puritans and New England • Settled for (Religious) Freedom • Protestants flee England due to persecution • Predestination • Belief that God guides those who are to be saved

  11. Answer as you read • On the same sheet as your DO NOW, answer the following questions: • Why do you think it starts with “In the name of God, Amen”? • Think about who is settling • What does the phrase “a civil Body Politick” mean? • Why this document a “germ of popular government?”

  12. Impact of Compact • In 1620, 41 men sign agreement to: • Make just and equal laws • A government chosen by consent of the people • Obey all laws made for the good of the people • Does this sound like anything you’ve heard of before? (Maybe we talked about it yesterday…?)

Massachusetts Bay • Winthrop leads merchants from England to Massachusetts Bay Colony • Grew faster • Religion is only one factor in founding • Establishes a representative government • “For we must consider that we shall be as a City upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us.” • What his Winthrop trying to say? Why do colonies set up self rule?

  16. Freedom… So long as you look like me • Coexist with Native Americans • Trade skills and goods freely • English have NO respect for the Native “savage” • Natives see their culture threatened • Breaks into open warfare for land • Foundations of the French and Indian War
