  3. Cities laid out like a grid • Expansion and trade  port cities grow • Boston • NYC • Philadelphia • Many people, inadequate public service • Lack of fire wood and clean water • Too much garbage Urban Life

People want to come because… • they are fleeing economic distress • William Penns policy of Religious freedom • Shared Quakers thoughts on opposition to war • Would Establish farms in frontier areas with families • Different groups include… • Dutch  NY • Scandinavians  Delaware • Jews  Newport and Philadelphia • Not all groups always got along • English colonists would try to get along with new groups • Furthering the evolution of a diverse American society Influx of Immigrants

Extensive work responsibilities • Few legal rights • Religion and law kept women under husbands rule • Puritan clergy men insisted that wives must obey their husbands • “Wives are part of the house and family and ought to be under a husbands government: they should obey their own husbands” Role of Women

Various scientists begin to wonder about/explore the world • Ventured from Religious beliefs to Science • Ben Franklin- Flew kite in thunderstorm with a key tied to it to prove that lightening is a form of electrical power • Effected political thought in colonies • Colonial leaders conclude that individuals have natural rights that the government must respect Enlightenment

Puritan church loses grip on society and begin to prosper • New Massachusetts charter • Freedom of worship • Permits all free men to vote • Preachers persuade colonists to rededicate themselves to god Great Awakening • Jonathan Edwards- Member of clergy who sought to revive the commitment of the original Puritan vision • Natives, Colonists, and Africans gather in new churches • People believe in what they want • Higher interest in education • People question Britain’s authority over their lives Great Awakening
