What is Physics? • Branch of science concerning with the interaction of matter, space, time and energy • definition provided by www.wiktionary.org • Previous Science Classes • Integrated Science - took during freshman year (BBHS); introduction to most basic branches of science. • Biology – took during sophomore year both in BBHS and VHS. • Chemistry – took during junior year
Welcome to A.P. Physics Summer Homework • Hewitt’s Conceptual Physics reading – help those student without prior knowledge about physics; Think and Explain questions for each chapters • Giancoli Unit 0 Works - textbook and online Expectations and Standards • Hand-out during the first day of school
Resources • Textbooks • Physics: Principles with Applications, Sixth Edition, Giancoli • Conceptual Physics, Hewitt • Chapter Gold and Blue Sheets • Work Books • Hickman • Concept Development • Boyle • AP Physics Exam • Kaplan Guide • Free Response sample binder • Red and Pink Booklets • Kinetic Book – Principles of Physics and Holt Tutorial; http://127.0.0.1:26300/Principles_of_Physics/toc.html • Online Resources • Giancoli website – wps.prenhall.com/esm_giancoli_physicspa_6/ • Vallejo-high.groupfusion.net – AP Physics • various links for various topics
Work, work and more work – so much FUN!!!!! • Homework • Summer homework – very important if you have no prior knowledge about physics • Nightly homework – spend at least 2 hours on them • Time logs – tremendously important • Class Work • Board work!!!!! • Pair share • Essential questions • Computer and Movie Notes very helpful • Labs • Pre-lab write up • Discover – its okay to have mistakes • Good observations + data + analysis = GREAT conclusion • Quiz • Gold and Blue Sheet • Equation Cards • Nice good rest before the quiz – don’t stress out • Can start early in the morning
How do I STUDY? • I do most of the things alone - much better if there is network with other students • Read and understand – getting away from memorizing bunch of crap • Blue Sheet questions – use for guide • Equation cards are good for tests • A little kick in the butt really helps • Have a little break sometimes help before tests • Look for more helpful resources online – some videos in www.youtube.com • www.cramster.com – very helpful when having problem with homework – you can share your thoughts as well
Why Take AP Physics • Tons of new materials to learn that you will never learn from anything or anywhere • Not only will learn physics, will learn about life as well. • A lot of resources than can explain concepts in different frame of reference • Everyone has there own frame of reference – its your chance to reason out • Small class size – better learning experience • Cozy classroom with a great teacher • Good for college if you are planning to go – of course you have to go!!! • Get to play with the expensive toys (just don’t break them, we didn’t get to do it) • Friday is a treat day – who wants free food!
Judgment Day – AAAAAHHHHH! • How to Prepare for AP Physics Exam • Kaplan Guide – good for free response practice • Principles of Physics: Gotchas and Summaries - http://127.0.0.1:26300/Principles_of_Physics/toc.html • Free Response Binder – sample problems with corrections • Red and Pink Book – multiple choice • Online work – Giancoli website • Blue Sheet – good for multiple choice • How to take the Test • THE MULTIPLE CHOICE • Take it easy don’t panic • Eliminate answers – better if able to eliminate 3 out of 5 • Don’t guess • List the concepts that apply to questions • If stuck with a question, move one, go back later • THE FREE RESPONSE • Knock the first question right of the bat • Problem solving skills – five –step method • List all concepts that apply • You have equation card – use it
Survive Physics • Read and understand • Blue Sheets say it all, Gold Sheets for solving problems • Nightly homework – spend at least 1 or 2 hours each night • Time-logs – don’t forget to put your stuff in • Board work for leadership points • Don’t just copy problems of the board, try figuring out what happened • Compare class notes and Cornell notes • Study group or networking is very helpful • Share your thoughts, reason out, everyone has a voice, FOR • Be active, don’t just sit on the corner, interact with the teacher and other student • Don’t get too active you might get shot • Equation cards are helpful during tests • Online works have points too – be sure to do them • Don’t procrastinate, no slaking or yeah you know what will happen
To know science is to do science – science is not only about words and concepts, it is better to see science in action Understand material not memorize them Use technology, they are their for something Improved as a person Gained more confidence What I learned
To everyone!!! Thank you so much for everything. I never thought I’d be able to meet people that I really looked up. Ever since I came to Vallejo High School, I really looked up to leadership people. Also I am glad that I met everyone because I really learned a lot this year. I never though that I’d gain great friends. Good luck to everyone and have fun. Thank so much!!!! Thanks for making this one of the best years of my life
Be a SQUARE take AP FIZIKZ next year E = mc^2 YEAH BABY...!!!!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH MR. TILLAY WE'LL MISS YOU!
