  1. Name: Form: Tech group: BIOMIMETICS Situation: Designers and inventors have always taken inspiration from nature when creating new products. From Leonardo Da Vinci's flying machine to Speedo’s Sharkskin swimsuits. This is called Biomimetics. (as in, to mimic or copy nature). Challenge Choose a source of natural inspiration and design a textile product which mimics or copies your inspiration in some way. Textiles products are made from fabric and include clothing, interiors such as curtains and bedding, outdoors products such as tents and hammocks and even building materials such as insulation. Use the success criteria below to support you in meeting or exceeding your MEG level. You should hand in… Evaluation (written in full sentences) Your design (coloured and labelled) Your research for level 6a and above (key information should be highlighted)

  2. Some ideas to get you going... Examples of biomimetic design The curved ends of the Burr thistle stick onto passing animals to spread their seeds. Designers created curved ends to velcro bristles so that they could stick together in the same way. 1. Velcro: inspired by Burrs 2. Morpho Butterfly: iridescent fabric Tiny ‘feathers’ on the wings of a Morpho butterfly reflect light to give the impression of being blue where no pigment exists. Fabric has been developed to give the appearance of bright colour without use of dyes. 3. Pinecones: waterproof fabric The shape of the pinecone with its down-turned scales protect the plants seeds. A fabric has been developed to allow moisture caused by perspiration to pass through tiny holes which are covered so that rain water cannot pass through from above.
