Description of ecosystem Dry forest and woodlands were formed over 3 million years ago, it forms a barrier across Victoria, it serves to protect many of the north facing slopes from the cool, moisture-laden winds sweeping in from bass straight and the southern ocean, this results in northern slopes and foot hills being relatively dry .
Species of Vegetation Dry forest’s and Woodlands have a variety of Eucalypts, Casuarinas and Cypress pines. There is also Grassy, heathy, sedge and herb-rich understoreys. Red gum forests, stringy bark forests, grassy woodlands and Iron bark forests. They also hold Victorias rarer flowers.
Animals Bush tailed phascogale, grey-crowned Babbler, Swift parrot
Climate In dry forest and woodlands the climate is hotter dryer and fire threats during the summer.
Environmental Issue Much of the dry forests and woodlands that would have been in Victoria In the 1800’s have diminished. Its been mainly due to the extensive clearing during the gold rushes and settlement. The demand for timber for housing mining and railways was large.
