Background & Context • As a research organization and over the years, SACN has used the model of Reference Groups to provide oversight on its work • One on Waste Management was created in 2012 • The Waste Management Reference Group (WMRG) comprises of waste management practitioners from all the nine member cities and SALGA national. • The main purpose of WMRG is to be a platform for knowledge generation, dissemination, learning and sharing of best practice as well as challenges, while it lobby’s Government (national and provincial) on waste management issues at the LG level.
Context continued • Through the WMRG, SACN initiated a data collection on waste management (research study) • The city data would be used as a baseline information for the ‘state of waste management in cities’ • The data & indicators will be tracked &monitored through for the next State of the Cities Reporting in 2016 • Sustainability reporting for 2016 SoCR will have a section on waste management • The waste indicators’ project will feed into the broader urban indicators project that will provide data into the SoCR

Proposed Facets of Waste Management Research (2012/13 – 2015/16) Status Quo ‘12/13 • A set of WM indicators developed with cities • Cities agreed to populate the data • Analyze the data and write a State of Waste Management in Cities Report Policy Briefs • A comparative analysis of governance models for waste management • Financing waste management with NT • Modelling exercise on the future impacts • Providing support to DEA for the implementation of the NCCRP (still being discussed) Future modelling/ CC impacts • Alignment & coordination on the key performance indicators e.gSALGA/DEA/CSP • Test their feasibility (measurability, access, reporting) • Collection and tracking of the progress Key Performance Indicators
