  1. 5 Solar Storage Options When Sunlight Is Limited

  2. Solar energy production has increased exponentially, year on year, and as a source of renewable power, it’s hard to beat in terms of accessibility and affordability. But, as more and more homes and businesses around the world adopt solar energy, one question continues to crop up: when the sun isn’t shining, can solar energy still be stored? On cloudy days or during the night, homes and businesses still need power, and if they’ve already got a solar panel system installed, it stands to reason that they would want it to produce the power needed.

  3. But is it possible to store solar energy for use during darkness or cloud cover, and if so, how? Read on to find out about some innovative energy storage systems and how they can help revolutionize the future of energy on a global scale:

  4. 1. Solar Batteries Having become more popular in recent years after emerging as a reliable way to store solar energy, solar batteries store any excess electricity that solar panels have produced during the hours of daylight, and release it when solar power access is limited or unavailable. While the capacity of power storage, and how long it will last, varying according to their size and specifications, solar batteries are a great option for anyone seeking a continuous supply of clean, green energy.

  5. Pumped Hydropower ● By using excess solar electricity to pump water from a reservoir in a lower position, to one in a higher position, pumped hydro storage systems are an effective solution to gaps in solar power production, they do require a significant infrastructural investment, and a geographical location that’s suitable. Working by releasing water to the lower reservoir when solar energy production levels are low, via a series of turbines, these systems are capable of generating electricity as and when needed. If you’re looking for a solar energy storage system on a bigger scale, these are efficient and highly effective.

  6. Thermal Energy ● Absorbing and storing any solar heat produced in excess for later use in a range of applications, thermal energy storage systems are not suitable for domestic purposes, but can be effective when used on an industrial scale. One example of such a system includes the storage of molten salt for use in concentrated solar plants; this involves the storing of heat in giant tanks of molten salt, which go on to produce both steam and electricity, even when the sun isn’t shining.

  7. Compressed air energy ● In this innovative approach to solar energy storage, air is compressed when an excess of solar power is generated, and stored either in large containers, or caverns underground, to be released as and when the need arises. Air that has been compressed expands, and when this is used to drive turbines, electricity is produced. Not yet a widespread technology, it does have a lot of potential for solar energy storage purposes on a large scale.

  8. Hydrogen Fuel Cells ● A promising energy storage method that’s both clean and efficient – emitting only water vapor as a byproduct – hydrogen fuel cells use excess solar electricity to produce hydrogen gas by way of a process known as electrolysis, in which hydrogen and oxygen are produced when water molecules are split. Stored in tanks underground, or in containers, the hydrogen can be accessed and used when the need for electricity arises, through the conversion of hydrogen fuel cells, back into electricity.

  9. For homeowners, solar batteries currently present the only feasible way to store excess electricity produced by solar panels for use on cloudy days, or during the hours of darkness. If you’d like to know more about powering your home with clean energy come rain or shine, speak to a local solar installer.
