  5. A previously studied BIG Idea! • Living creatures are organized • Their bodies and systems have various levels of organization, from the very small (cell) to the very large (entire elephant) that allow life

  7. Cell • Made of organelles • Basic unit of structure & function • May be many kinds in one organism- each with a specific function • The smallest part that is living

  8. Tissue • Layers of the same kind cell working together

  9. Organs • Tissues that work together to perform a specific activity • Heart, lungs, eyes, kidneys, etc.

  10. Organ Systems • Two or more organs that work together in the body to perform specific functions • Circulatory system, skeletal system, muscular system, etc. • We just spent an entire six-weekson these systems!!!

  11. Organism • Entire living things that can carry out the basic life processes • Usually made of systems, but may be only a single cell

You and your lab partnerwill research one assigned systemand write a one-page papertogether that: • Describes the system. • Explains how the system interacts with otherbody systems. • Explains why your assigned system is themost important in the body!   15. Interaction of Body Systems • Human body systems interact with one another and are interdependent upon each other. • Lets look at three examples: • Transportation of oxygen • Digestion of food • Body movement

Interaction of Body Systems • Transportation of oxygen • Respiratory (mouth, trachea, lungs, alveoli): delivery of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide • Circulatory (heart, blood, arteries): carries oxygen from lungs to all cells in body • Muscular (diaphragm and chest muscles): enables air to enter lungs; inhale and exhale

Interaction of Body Systems • Digestion of food • Digestive (mouth, stomach, liver, small/large intestine): breakdown and absorption of food nutrients • Circulatory (heart, blood, arteries/veins): carries nutrients from small intestine to all cells in body • Muscular (jaw muscles, smooth muscles): allows for chewing and peristalsis

Interaction of Body Systems • Body Movement • Muscular (skeletal muscles): contract and relax to produce movement • Skeletal (bones, joints, tendons/ligaments): attached to muscles for movement • Nervous (brain, spinal cord, nerves): direct and control muscle movement • Circulatory (heart, blood, blood vessels): circulate oxygen and nutrients to muscles
