  2. My Elementary Years • Sadly, I cannot recall any favorite books from my early childhood. When I asked my mom for some ideas, she didn’t have any either. It doesn’t sound like we did a lot of reading at that time She was a single parent who often worked two jobs, so I’m sure that made it difficult to find the time. I do recall having a subscription to a series of Walt Disney book of the month club, and having a set of the Little Golden books. • One book that does stand out in my mind is Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. However, I remember that book because it frightened me, not because I enjoyed it.

  3. My Elementary Years: As a reader • I was an average reader, but I also remember being a slow and methodical reader. It always took me longer to finish what everyone was reading. In school I primarily remember Round Robin reading from the basil and those I am Sam type books (yellow, lots of rhyme and repetition). I don’t recall being read many picture books at school either during that time.

  4. My Late Elementary Years • Once I reached 5th or 6th grade I developed a love of pop and rock music, and all things related to it. I remember reading Rolling Stone magazines and various pre-teen music magazines. I started reading biographies of some of my favorite artists, and that love of learning about real people has always stayed with me. I did a project on the Salem Witch trials, which got me interested in crime stories. Istarted reading crime stories in middle school.

  5. Our Elementary Library • I don’t recall having a pleasant experience with books in our elementary library. However, I remember our library had lots of computers and it was really exciting to use them because we didn’t have one at home.

  6. Overall Experience • Overall, I have to say that I didn’t develop a love of reading in elementary school. My fondness of reading developed closer to middle school when I started reading for personal enjoyment. I do remember a high school literature class that I loved, which turned me on to some fantastic authors and books. If I had to speculate I think it’s because I had limited exposure to quality literature. Most of the books I read in school were not authentic literature, and a lot of the books at home were the Disney books that were just a script of the movie. It’s a shame, because there’s so many wonderful picture books out there!
