Definition of Cohesion Cohesion is about linking ideas or concepts and controlling threads and relationships over the whole text.

Two different samples 4 A range of cohesive devices enhances reading and supports the underlying relationships. These relationships include clear referencing. There are connectives, substitution (itwill never be the same) and word associations (e.g. bars/enclosures/ prisoners/locking them up).
Strategies • Sequence the pictures. Write a sentence under each picture. • Now model for students and get students to use temporal conjunctions such as, firstly, briefly, when, before, at this point, in short, finally, to begin, after that, to connect the sentences. • Discuss the purpose of conjunctions and how they provide a cohesive text. • Discuss/ highlight the variety of conjunctions in the completed text. • Write and display these for students to refer to when constructing their own recounts.
