  3. Marie Oliver • Born in Cleveland, Ohio, 1935. • Influenced by the poet Edna Vincent Millay. • In 1984, her collection of poetry entitled “The American Primitive” won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. • She is most famous for her poems “The Sun” and “Mockingbirds”. Return to Main Menu Next Slide

Maya Angelou • Originally Margauerite Johnson • Born April 4th, 1928 in Saint Louis Missouri. • Angelou played a vital role in the Civil Rights movement. • Angelou’s poem “I know why the caged bird sings” is a poem about Maya’s turbulent childhood. • Maya Angelou was a poet, writer, and had a productive career in TV and film. • She is most famous for her poems “In and out of time”, “Still I rise”, and “I know why the caged bird sings”.   5. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe • In 1765, he went to Liepzig to study law. • His earliest lyric poems were set to music. • At first, he did not wish to write poetry. He wanted to study animals and plants. • Von Goethe is most famous for his poem called “The Holy Longing” Next Slide Return to Main Menu

YannisRitsos • 1909-1990 • Greek poet • Ritsos moved from an early concern with classical themes and style to a more personal type of lyricism. • His writing reflects family tragedies. • Fun Fact: Ritsos had been incarcerated. • He is most famous for his poem “Summer”. Ralph Angel • Born in Seattle Washington, 1951. • Published author: Twice Removed (Sarabande Books, 2001) Neither World • His poems have appeared in the New Yorker, Poetry, The Antioch Review, The American Poetry Review. • He is the Edith R. White Distinguished Professor at the University of Redlands, in California. • He is most famous for his poems “Breaking and Entering” and “Even Because”. Return to Main Menu Next Slide

Charles Bukowski • Bukowski was a poet, novelist, and short story writer. • Bukowski was influenced by the social, cultural, and economic ambience of the LA area. • Charles Bukowski has published over sixty books. • One of his most famous poems is “A smile to remember”.   9. Laurie Lee • 1914-1997 • In many of Lee’s biographies, it says that he was born and raised in the city of Slad. But his family says that that move was made when he was about three years old. • This move affected his writing, which can all be seen in his autobiography entitled “Cider with Rosie”. • His autobiography ended up being his most famous work. • He was also a published author, with books titled “As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning” and “A Moment of War” • For an example of Lee’s work, see the poem “Town Owl”. EE Cummings • Edward Estlin Cummings was born on October 14th, 1894, in Cambridge Massachusetts. • Cummings was a professor of Sociology and Political Science at Harvard University. • Fun Fact: Cummings became an ordained minister of the South Congregational Church. • The five year period following his wife’s death is said to have resulted in his best work.
