THE DESTINY OF FALSE TEACHERS(Lessons on 2 Peter 2) The Worst Condition (2 Peter 2:20-22)
THE WORST CONDITION(2 Peter 2:20-22) • WHO THEY ARE (2:20a) • WHAT THEY HAVE DONE (2:20b) • WHERE THEY ARE (2:21) • WHAT IT MEANS (2:22) What can be done??
WHO THEY ARE (2:20a) • People who have escaped • 2 Peter 1:4; 2:18 • “to flee from, escape” • …the pollutions of the world • “That which defiles” – “moral defilement” • John 18:28; Tit. 1:15; Heb. 12:15; 2 Pet 2:10 • World – heathen society • Knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
WHO THEY ARE (2:20a) • …knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ • They lose this knowledge step by step… • Eph. 4:13; Col. 2:2; 3:10; 1 Tim. 2:4 They are Christians
WHAT HAVE THEY DONE (2:20b) • They have become entangled again. • “To inweave; a gradual process” – IT LEADS TO DEFEAT…2 Tim. 2:4 (as being caught in a net) • They have been here before. • And overcome: “worsted” • “To be less, inferior, in a less favored condition;” VANQUISHED (see vv. 14,18) • Beaten by that which they had overcome!
WHAT HAVE THEY DONE (2:20b) • Worse than the beginning • See Mt. 12:45; Lk. 11:26; Heb. 6:4-8; 10:26 • Why? • Deeper in sin • More knowledge – more guilt • Harder to bring back • Beginning: before they obeyed
WHERE THEY ARE (2:21) • They are not in a better condition. • More useful, conducive to good, superior, more excellent, more valuable • See Heb. 1:4; 6:9; 7:7,19,22 • What a compliment!!
WHERE THEY ARE (2:21) • They are not ignorant. • They knew and obeyed. • The rejection of this knowledge is worse because • They now bring reproach on Christ. • They are deeper in sin. • They shall be judged more severely (Lk. 12:47-48)
WHERE THEY ARE (2:21) • They are not walking in the “way of righteousness” • The course to be followed. • See verses 2,15; Is. 35:8 • Righteousness – see 1:1; Ps. 119:172 • “After they have known it”
WHERE THEY ARE (2:21) • They are not turned to the holy commandment delivered to them. • They are turned from it, though… • Holy commandment – 1 Tim. 6:12-14 • This means: the doctrine and the morality • Delivered – to give over, hand over, deliver up They had been given the truth of God – and look at what they had done with it.
WHAT IT MEANS (2:22) • Something has happened. • And continues • Matthew 7:6 • It is a true proverb. • It is verified. • These two animals were despised
WHAT IT MEANS (2:22) • Two illustrations: • The dog and his vomit (Prov. 26:11) • The sow and the mire • Point: They were both changed, and they both went back. Think about it…
WHAT CAN BE DONE ???

UNFAITHFUL: • Consider what you have done (2 Pt. 2:20-22) • Listen to Peter • You are lost (2 Pt. 2) • There is a way out (Ac. 8:18-24) • COME (1 John 1:6-10) • Repent • Confess • Pray
SINNER: • Hear – Rm. 10:17 • Believe – Jn. 3:16 • Count the cost – Lk. 14:26-35 • Obey – Rm. 6
