Why a CICES-Be? • Need for harmonized system and local-adapted system for Belgium: • BEES output • ESS mapping in Wallonia and Flanders (NARA) • Start big research projects • Checklists requested by users (egVLM) • Reporting to Europe • Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES)

3. Results (1) • Outputs: • CICES-Be v.5 based on the recommendations of Belgian experts. • Comparison table between the international CICES classification v4.3 and the CICES-Be v5 classification.

Results (2) • Correlation between CICES & CICES-Be • Provisioning & regulatory services: • Section level in CICES-Be: Water supply, climate regulation, regulation of the biotic environment. • Nutrition: Organised according to ecosystem of origin in CICES-Be (terrestrial , freshwater, marine). • Regulatory services spit-up based on processes(mediation of waste, toxics and other nuisances). In CICES-Be: Split up according to medium (soil & water, air, noise). • Soil & water-related ESS: • CICES: Separated • CICES-Be: Integrated in 1 category • Relevant ESS for Belgium context in CICES-Be: Ornamental plants & animals, Regulation invasive species, Regulation human diseases, Natural surroundings around build-up areas.

Results (3) • Cultural services: • Different conceptualised in CICES-Be: • Several C-ESS in CICES: Benefits of other cultural services (e.g. intellectual and representative interactions) • Existence & Bequest: Not included in CICES-BE as they are considered part of valuation methods, and not as self-standing categories for CICES.
