Research Papers What, why, and how.
What is a Research Paper? • Investigate a topic • Read what others say about the topic • Form your own ideas/opinions based on your research • Present those ideas for others to think about
2 types • Argumentative: • a debatable topic • purpose is to persuade the reader • Analytical: • Maybe a debatable topic • purpose is to offer new ideas on topic
Why do we need to do research? • We need to prove our ideas. • Without evidence, why should anyone believe us? • The best evidence comes from experts.
Where can we do research? • Internet • Websites • Online publications • Books • Magazines • Newspapers • Interviews
Internet Research PRO CON Easy & quick More difficult to find original source Variety of sources Anyone can post anything More difficult to verify quality/credibility
Step 1: do some general searches to find out more information on your topic
You discover a terrible cancer killed many of them in the 1990s…this special cancer is called DFTD…you want to know what effect this has had on the devils Step 3:brainstorm to determine your focus Cancer You find out that their status is “threatened” because there aren’t many left…you wonder what they are doing about it… threatened Breeding programs You discover there are special breeding programs…these interest you
Step 4: determine the subtopics of your paper Subtopic 2 Subtopic 1 Subtopic 3 Subtopic 4 The basics: an overview of the TD – all the background information needed to understand the topic Past: what happened to threaten the TD in the past (farmers and disease); what the results were for the TD Present: what are the breeding programs, where, what do they do, etc. Future: what does the future hold, what still needs to be done, what can people do, etc.
Step 5: refocus your topic to draft a thesis statement THESIS First killed by farmers and then hit by a targeted strain of cancer, the Tasmanian Devil is a species near the brink of extinction; they are in need of special breeding programs by governments and zoos from around the world in order to ensure their survival.
Step 7: take notes, write up your SOURCE CARDS,compile everything together, draft an outline
Step 8: select quotes or pieces of evidence (from your SOURCE CARDS) to support your ideas
