March 4, 2014 • Sanction: a threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule; official permission or approval for an action • Example: When professional athletes break the laws of their league, they have to deal with the sanctions that are put on them. • premise: a previous statement or proposition from which another is inferred or follows as a conclusion • Example: If you don’t know basic premise of the movie, you might be confused.

March 5 , 2014 • mimic- imitate (someone or their actions or words), typically in order to entertain or ridicule • Example: If you mimic the format I presented, you will better understand the task I am asking you to do. • mere- that is solely or no more or better than what is specified • Example: I am a mere teacher, so I don’t make up the dress code, but I have to enforce it.

4. march 6, 2014 • cease- bring or come to an end • Example: The talking must cease so we can begin class. • motif- a distinctive feature or dominant idea in an artistic or literary composition; a decorative design or pattern • Example: The artist uses a similar motif in all of his paintings.

March 7, 2014 • fortitude- courage in pain or adversity • Example: The knight showed his fortitude in the last battles he fought in • torrent- a sudden, violent, and copious outpouring of (something, typically words or feelings;) a strong and fast-moving stream of water or other liquid • Example: There was a torrent cry for the government to help the flood victims.

6. March 10, 2014 • Innate- inborn; natural • Example: John’s athleticism is innate because he is the leading scored even though he never even attended a soccer camp. • prosperous- successful in material terms; flourishing financially • Example: If you work hard, one day, you will be prosperous.

March 11, 2014 • poise- graceful and elegant bearing in a person; balance • Example: Jenny’s poise was noticeable even across the room. • writhe- make continual twisting, squirming movements or contortions of the body • Example: When someone is in pain, he may writhe to try to get away from the afflicter.

March 12, 2014 • tact- a good sense of what to say or do to avoid giving offense; skill in dealing with difficult or delicate situations; sense of what is appropriate, tasteful • Example: If you are going to tell Sharon about her mistake, I hope you use tact. • adroit-clever or skillful in using the hands or mind • Example: An adroit leader will be able to persuade people to go with his ideas.

March 13, 2014 • prim- stiffly formal and respectable; feeling or showing disapproval of anything regarded as improper • Example: Harold was very prim when he attended the state dinner. • piety- the quality of being religious or reverent; respectful or dutiful to God • Example: When you go to church, you show your piety. 10. March 14, 2014 • omit- leave out or exclude • Example: Please don’t omit your name from your test. • intent- showing earnest and eager attention; purpose • Example: Although your intent was not to insult Kerry, you did. Test: March 19

March 17, 2014 • douse- pour a liquid over; drench • Example: The firefighters tried to douse the flames in order to save the house. • requisition- an official order laying claim to the use of property or materials; a formal written demand that some duty should be performed or something be put into operation • Example: I received a requisition, so I had to report to jury duty.
