  2. Western Australian context • 2009, 25% of Year 9 students study an Asian Language • 2008,1% of Year 12 students studied an Asian language • 39 students studied Chinese • 22 students studied Indonesian • 97 students studied Japanese

BRIDGE Projects (Building Relationships through Intercultural Dialogue and Growing Engagement) • Australia -Indonesia BRIDGE Project 2008-9 (30 schools nationally) • Margaret River SHS • Tranby College • Australia -Indonesia BRIDGE Project 2010 • Scotch College • Guildford Grammar • Secret Harbour Primary School • Cooinda Primary School • Australia-Korea BRIDGE Project 2010 (8 schools nationally) • Como SC

Access Asia Offers extensive Professional Development opportunities conducted by Greg Harper and Pauline O’Brien; These include: • Asia themed Visual Arts Workshops; • Asian Cuisine Workshops; • the Wild Ways Banners Art Conservation Project; • travel and Study Tours; and • Asian Inspired Art Displays. In total 723 individuals from 339 WA schools participated in these PD sessions in 2009. 221 people were new to AA.

  5. 2008 Banners were widely displayed with interpretive signage.

  6. Access Asia • Online Access Asia newsletter. Monthly publication which contains information about current state/national projects and issues, grants, competitions, tours and resources (text, online, community groups). • Emailed to over 650 educators on the Access Asia data base then further disseminated through WASSEA, WAPPA and the Secondary Bulletin. • Changes in 2010.

  7. Language Assistants Program • O/S graduate teachers attached to public schools, in partnership with The Japan Foundation, Confucious Institute and Han Ban; and the Indonesian Consulate. • Japanese placements at Shenton College, Rossmoyne SHS, Leeming SHS, Willeton SHS. • Indonesian placements at Margaret River SHS, Cowaramup PS, Margaret River PS, SIDE, John Willcock College, Mt Tarcoola PS, Geraldton PS, Melville SHS, Palmyra PS, Attadale PS. • Chinese placements planned for later in 2010.

Asian Language Hubs: Intended outcomes • Increase demand for an Asian language program beyond Year 9 • Provide continuous quality Asian language pathways from partner primary schools through to Year 12 • Ensure more students are engaged in cumulative language learning enabling the attainment of fluency in the Asian language • Provided sufficient time-on-task to provide students with the opportunity to complete Stage 3 Courses • Increase student knowledge and understanding of Asian cultures

Intended outcomes (cont’d) • Promote Asia literacy across the school curriculum to increase student knowledge of Asian cultures • Establish a leadership pathway for language teachers • Provide professional learning support for Asian language teachers • 2010 Phase 2 - expression of interest.
