Practical Issues in Providing Effective Clinical Supervision: The NIATx/ATTC Network Clinical Supervision Project Kim Johnson, MBA, Deputy Director, NIATx Laurie Krom, MS, Director, ATTC National Office September 7, 2012 NetworkofPractice.org
Agenda • Vision • Challenges • Responses • What is the Network of Practice? • Where are we now? • Website Tour • Your Input
Vision • Individuals with substance use disorders are treated effectively using the most appropriate evidence-based practices that promote long-term recovery • Clinical supervisors are valued members of the treatment team who know how to provide effective supervision and to successfully implement EBPs with fidelity
Challenges to Vision • Have you ever been a clinical supervisor at an organization that was working on implementing an evidence-based practice? • Poll • If yes, what difficulties did you face? • Please respond using CHAT function
Challenges to Vision • Evidence-based practices are not routinely implemented with fidelity • Lack of communication and collaboration between practitioners and researchers • Networking resources devoted specifically to clinical supervisors are scarce • Clinical supervisors are not often recognized for the crucial role they play in the implementation process
Response to Challenges • What have you (or your organization) done to alleviate barriers clinical supervisors face during EBP implementation? • Please respond using CHAT function
Response to Challenges What if we built a website with associated interactive tools that addressed the unmet need(s) of clinical supervisors related to implementing EBPs and promoting knowledge sharing?
And so the Network of Practice was born … www.NetworkofPractice.org
Response to Challenges • Guiding principles behind website • People tend not to use information when it is handed to them unless they have an opportunity to interact and modify it. • The way people interact is through social networking.
Response to Challenges • Purposes of website • To make the job of clinical supervisors easier • Tools to enhance clinical supervision • Implementation guide • Social support • To recognize clinical supervisors for their hard work • Incentives for use • Social support (recognition from peers)
Where are we now? • NIDA grant • Preliminary research • ATTCs invited to join • Phase 1 • Implementation checklist • Pilot for use with group implementing motivational incentives
Your input • On a scale of 1 to 5, how useful do you think the Network of Practice will be to your work? • Poll • What would make the site more useful? • Please respond using CHAT function • Additional Questions? • Please respond using CHAT function
