  1. The power to change the world

  2. What is Junior Energy? Junior Energy's mission is to work in classrooms and schools to help children discover how they can positively impact the planet by engaging their parents, family, friends and neighbors in small, simple actions. **Junior Energy is 501(c)(3) organization

  3. Components Fully integrated program incorporates four important steps to move kids from ideas to action

  4. Benefits

  5. Goals

  6. Clinton Global Initiative Commitment Junior Energy, in its initial three years, has the potential to impact an estimated 10,000 families in at least three states, including New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. This will save at least 60 million kWh and eliminate more than 94 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.

  7. Progress to Date • November 08: Launch in PS 187, NY a SUCCESS • February 09: PS 59 (NY) and Sicomac School (NJ) • March 09: PS 20 (Queens), MS 278 (Inwood), Closter (NJ) • April 09: Norwood (NJ), PS 24 (Bronx), Petrides School (Staten Island), Cresskill (NJ) • Partnerships: TCPi, Project Green Schools, Solar One, Finding Dulcinea, Ultimate Gaga, National Environmental Education Week, UFT

  8. Junior Energy Philosophy The 3 E’s

  9. Building Blocks

  10. Empowerment • Young people are the next generation of leaders • In a national survey of kids ages 8-12, 85 percent of respondents believed that they could lead their family to do what is needed to consume less energy in the home.* • Junior Energy gives students the resources to understand today’s most pressing problems and the tools to take action on them. *Source: Ad Council

  11. Education

  12. Environment

  13. Action If every child in America changed one light bulb, each year we would save enough energy to light nearly 2 million homes and reduce energy bills by $380 million. In addition, the savings in greenhouse gases would be equivalent to the emissions from more than half a million cars.

  14. How it Works

  15. Fundraiser Specifics • Approximately $1 per pack of bulbs goes back to your school • All proceeds remaining after the actual manufacturer cost of the bulb go directly to the school • Junior Energy does not keep any of the funds – we are a privately funded non-profit organization

  16. Pricing per Bulb

  17. How It Works

  18. On-Line Follow Up

  19. Keys to Success • In-school champion: PTA, Teacher or Parent • Creative marketing plan: innovative ideas • Know your audience: help schools tailor program • Engage students: marketing, selling, distribution • Information: be sure parents understand the product • Setting goals: have number of bulbs, GHG reduction or project in mind • Every student is a winner: anyone who changes a bulb is a hero

  20. Feedback Loop

  21. Mercury Concerns • Bulbs purchased have least amount of mercury of CFL’s on market (about 1.7 mg) • All regular fluorescent bulbs now used in offices and schools have mercury in them---a standard T-12 bulb has ~12 milligrams • Junior Energy site provides instructions for bulb accident clean-ups and recycling • Proper handling will prevent breakage---bulbs will be packaged for safety

  22. THANK YOU
