  2. Birth and Family • Phoebe Yates Levy was born on August 18, 1823 • She was born in Charleston, South Carolina as the fourth out of seven children • Her parents were Jacob Levy and Phoebe Yates • The Levy family was wealthy and very socially prominent • The Levy family was Jewish

  3. Marriage • Phobe married Thomas Pember who was from Boston • Thomas Pember was not Jewish • Thomas Pember died shortly after their marriage

  4. Civil war nursing • When the Civil War started Phoebe received an offer to work as a nurse at Chimborazo Military Hospital • Phoebe administered medication, assisted surgeons in operations, patching wounds and caring for patients. Often, she simply served as a final companion to the dying - writing letters, reading stories, playing cards, talking

Chimborazo Military Hospital • Chimborazo Hospital was the largest military hospital in the world at that time. • At Chimborazo there were severe shortages of personnel, medicine, food, and equipment • There were also primitive facilities, unsanitary conditions,and undeveloped scientific knowledge of medical treatments

  6. A Southern Woman's STORY • After the Civil War ended Phoebe wrote a book about the hardships of life in Confederate Richmond • The book was first published in 1879 • Civil War historian Douglas SouthallFreeman said her book is "the most realistic treatment of the war" ever published

  7. Death • Died on March 4, 1913 • Died of breast cancer • Is buried at the Laurel Grove Cemetery
