Importance of Phoebe Phoebe is an important symbol in this novel because she represents his love and admiration for children. Holden loves the innocence of children and the fact that they have not yet been hit by life and the phoniness that adults portray. Holden describes her as unusually intelligent for her age and the only kid with any sense.
“You'd like her. I mean if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell you're talking about. I mean you can even take her anywhere with you. If you take her to a lousy movie, for instance, she knows it's a lousy movie. If you take her to a pretty good movie, she knows it's a pretty good movie.” pg.88
